Dr. Bergsten is one of the the best professors at Ship, and by far my favorite of the semester. She is always available during her office hours. Although her class is a difficult one especially for freshmen she makes it seem possible. She constantly stops class to answer any questions you have. In addition she will give a study guide for every test that gives you an idea of what the test will be like. Her homework is almost non-existent, but simple when assigned. Her lab is very easy as long as you read the instructions before each lab for the lab quiz. She will give a detailed explanation before each lab, and she doesnt cram lab reports down your throat. In fact she will not assign a full report until late in the semester. If you have the chance I would take her before any other Bio professor.

Bergsten seems like a know-it-all professor that would grade hard on her students but actually she is a pretty awesome professor. If you come to class and participate in her lectures you'll get an easy A. If you come to class and cheat off other student's papers like kids in my class did- you'll fail just like they did. Overall, take bergsten for Bio if you can :D

Subject: A Fair Class  (Dec 11 2008, 05:13PM)

I am an English major, and not particularly fond of Biology. However, Bergsten's class was a relatively simple and straightforward approach and I am glad for this. I have struggled with Science in the past, and happily this class is very fair- what you put in is what you get out.
The structure is relatively straightforward- classes consist of either note-taking or the tests themselves, occasionally peppered with activities or even a discussion or two. The class itself is fairly dull unless you have an interest in the material, but if you can take semi-intelligent notes you will have no problem with her tests.
There are 4 tests (the last of which counts as the final but only has 10 very basic cumulative questions)- about 40 multiple choice questions and an essay- about 2-3 paragraphs seemed to cover all she asked for on those. She puts out study guides on BlackBoard about 2 weeks beforehand and tells you the essay the class before a test. If you can answer all the questions on the Study Guide with a sentence or two you are ready for the test. The tests are mostly lifted directly from the study guide, though if she talks at length about an example in class she may use a similar setup to illustrate her point. Rarely (if ever) are questions arbitrary or irrelevant. If you have a general grasp of the concepts you will do just fine.
My favorite thing about this class was the attendance policy. There was no strict attendance policy, but at the end of random classes- about 14 or 15 in total- there was a basic activity. Usually a simple worksheet or diagram, these were worth 5 points, and nearly full credit was given just for completion. If you are not there for class, you don't get the points (though I had the luck of getting kind groupmates who put my name on papers when I was absent if I did the same for them). You are allowed to drop 2 '0's from this grade- in essence, you can miss two classes and you will see a noteworthy but gradual drop- maybe 2% of your final average- each time thereafter. I felt it was a very fair way of ensuring participation and attendance.
I would recommend her to anyone looking to take an entry-level or low level Biology course- I found her class was quite a pleasant experience.

She tries to make class really exciting by giving common examples. I thought the tests were based on a lot of information that was not properly covered in the course. Overall though, she's really accessible whenever you have questions and helps a lot with study guides.

If you can get in, take her class, just be prepared to pay attention and take notes. She puts all of her lectures on blackboard so if you miss class you wont be too far left behind. Shes really flexible. Just remember to do the study guides she hands out before tests and you're fine.

Subject: Not that Bad  (Dec 20 2006, 11:05AM)

Quick Review: 1) Don't miss class (you'll probably miss bonus points and she talks about specifics that'll show up on tests) 2) Don't miss activity days (they are easy points and will show up on tests) 3) Don't miss the review day (she literally gives you half the questions/answers that will be on the tests) 4) Know the essay questions (they are word for word given to you beforehand -- no reason you shouldn't ace that part of the tests) FINAL COMMENTS: the class is repetitive powerpoint, however, she does try to make it interesting by trying to relate everything to "our world today" so it's a bit more relevant. There are no surprises on the tests (about 2-3 hours study time for each) and 20% of your grade comes from easy activities -- it's right where a BIO 100-level course should be.

She's an excellent biology professor. I'm terrible at biology and I was able to make an A in here with some good study time (about 6 hrs. per exam the night before). She's very, very nice, extremely knowledgeable, very welcoming of questions, fair, and fun. The material could be dry, but she makes it interesting and applicable to non-science majors. There were three exams, all equally weighted at 20%, a short (3-4 page) paper on an easy topic, and lots of small groups activities. I strongly recommend taking Dr. Bergsten if you can, she's too nice to pass up.

She is a great prof. She requires you call her Sherri instead of Dr. Bergsten or Dr. B or whatever. She doesn't mind helping out a student. She is always there to help. She gives you the notes on Blackboard but it doesnt cover everything she covers in class. Sometimes she deletes something, sometimes it is a whole chapter. She also gives you side notes in class. She is an AWESOME prof and I would take her again if I had the opportunity.

While her class isn't the easiest, she's an awesome prof and always willing to help. Bio is one of my worst subjects, and I struggled a bit in her class, but I went to talk to her and she was more than willing to help. She tutored me one on one and printed out extra material for me. She is so willing to help any of her students! On the final day of class she announced that she was dropping our lowest test grade which was awesome! There's generally small group work, and about four tests. But she is ALWAYS willing to help.

This teacher is really great. She is very helpful when you have activities in class. She puts all her notes up on Blackboard so it's easier to follow along. If you pay attention in class like you should, you can write everything down and remember it. She gives us outlines for the tests which consist of 50 multiple choice and and essay she gives you the question for. She is such a nice person too, take her if you can

The first exam was impossible?! I got a 100% and got a 100% on the next two exams. This class is EASY if you just show up and pay attention. I didn't even study that much. It helped that she curved her second two exams also (5% on the 2nd and 7.5% on the third!).

Dr. Bergsten is very personable, down to earth and friendly. She is eager to help any way she can with the material. Her first exam was nearly impossible, but she was willing to let us make up for it with an optional retake with the same questions as the original test and we were able to use our notes. The next exam wasn't as bad and her study guide was better. All her notes are on powerpoint and she puts them on blackboard. We have small group activities every other week for the whole class period which is a change from having lecture and writing notes. You get to do what she's taught hands on and sometimes doing this clears things up if you don't quite get it. It's not an easy course, I still recommend taking her, but you have to pay attention and study!

Subject: Woah your geekiness...it's not that easy.  (Dec 19 2005, 12:56PM)

First of all if you got a 100% on all her tests....you're a total geek who has nothing better to do than study...Her tests were impossible... so much that she had to make up a review game so people got better grades on them... Remember that sally?.... Anyway she is a very good person, very nice and helpful and jittery....when she lectures she has a tendency to jump from power point to the blackboard in a split second and it sometimes gets confusing...but she makes up a lot of your points with group work at the end of class everyday....I bombed the first test and still had a D in the class come mid-terms. (with one test and all the group work)... even though I bombed the first test she made a review game which I mentioned earlier and half the tests questions were almost directly off of it, which made my grades much better.... She also ended up dropping our lowest test grade which means I probably got 5 points below ol' sir studies-a-lot here...another good thing is that this was just her 2nd semester teaching (fall 05') and I think her class will become easier with time...I would take Dr. Bergsten again... She's a cool lady.
