I really liked Cairns, he actually makes class interesting! If you go to class and actually do the homework he assigns you WILL get a good grade, I had him for 2 classes so far and both were the same, I got a C in Int. 2 but that was my fault for not putting the time in...he basically tells you what will be on the exams. If you can do the homework, you can pass the tests. And he was always willing to answer questions so you shouldn't have any excuse.

If you REALLY do the homework in this class, you will do well. If you just half-ass the homework, you will get a C or D. All the tests are homework problems with changed numbers or from the "B" set of problems. Gives an extra credit quiz at the end of the semester and lets you use a cheat sheet for exams.

Is Dr. Cairns' class hard? Yes, so study. In his classes Cairns glosses over a lot of what the book covered and hits the rough spots and the exceptions that aren't in the book (what good is it to go to a class where all you have to do is read the book). Dr. Cairns also goes over the homework in class (yes I got an A in each class but I did ZERO homework) to help you understand what is going to be on the test (several questions on the tests are from homework). If you can read the book and take notes (preferrably before he goes over it in class, though many times I was behind) you should be able to understand what he is going over in class. One thing I have to hand it to Scotty is that when you need him or something comes up, he is there to help. This semester I had a child born and missed the last week of school for a new job and Dr. Cairns did his best to make sure I knew what material had been covered and what was going to be on the final.

Cairns talks about his life outside of school a lot...he loves weather, Penn State, and being in local plays....yeah he's kind of a nerd. Anyway, he's very detail oriented and so are his tests. The course consists of 4 exams 70pts each, pop quizes and projects 60 pts. total, a final 120 pts. and a first week fundies review test 40 pts. He lets you have a sheet of notes for every test and it helps you study and take the pressure off during the exam. He cares a lot about details so I don't think it's possible to get anything perfect (he took 2 points off my exam b/c he didn't think my debits lined up good enough). Anyway, a lot of people don't like Cairn's teaching style. He's kind of all over the place. He goes over homeworks and talks about the chapter, but it always seems like he's assuming you already understand everything and he's just reviewing or picking up details. I haven't taken the final yet, but I have an 87% right now. It's very doable to get a good grade in this class, but like all accounting classes, it will take a lot of work. There's no attendance grade, no extra credit, and no making up pop quizes. Good luck.....Bardo and Cairns are both failing a lot of kids this semester.

Scotty is a decent prof. He knows his stuff real well and will teach you. But he goes very fast and you have to stay on top of the practice problems to keep up. If you take him in the fall, be careful, because if you come in on a Monday after Penn State lost the previous Saturday, he will be majorly pissed off. Oh, and there are a bunch of pop quizes.

This class will be hard if you don't read the text and do the problems. You also have to read the book. Not necesarily teach yourself, but have a good understanding of what it's saying then you'll understand what Dr. Cairns is talking about in class. That was my mistake. I sat in class thinking "What the hell is he talking about" but when I went to study for the final all of it was right there and easier to understand the second time through. He assumes you read the text and that's why he doesn't go too in depth in the class. I enjoyed this class and actually learned stuff with Dr. Cairns even though I didn't do all that well. Plus if you go to every class you get extra credit. I highly suggest going to this class too. He gives pop quizzes but he tells you when they're going to be and you can have a sheet of notebook paper to look off of. If you actually take time to learn the stuff and read the text, you'll do well.

I really like Dr. Cairns, although I flunked the tests so bad, I still loved being in the classes. There was so much homework to do that I couldn't go out any night ever, not even (Friday's or saturday's) because Dr. Cairns would make me go over to his house and learn accounting problems all day long, on weekends it was from 2 pm - 9 pm, and on weekdays after school from 6 pm - 11 pm, I highly suggest him to anyone!

I think Dr. Cairns has to be one of the best profs on campus. He knows what he's doing, he takes out the useless junk, and teaches with a real-world perspective. As long as you study the self-test questions at the end of the book, do the assigned homework, and do the online test questions, you'll do fine. He's easy to listen to and makes it interesting. Take him if you can...it's definately worth your time.

I had a terrible experience with Dr. Cairns. He is a difficult teacher and truly makes you feel like a total idiot. He will expect all students to already understand what he is supposed to teach, so be prepared to teach yourself. Unfortunately, I can not give any pointers as to what to study for in his courses. He will tests on material that is not discussed. Your best bet is to pay very close attention to the text, but even then you will be lucky if you can answer many of his questions well.

I've never written a bad review on a professor before, but he's awful. I worked really hard in this class and barely pulled out a C. I read every chapter, did all the homework, and went to tutoring several times. He expects you to teach yourself, which I can usually do, but his multiple choice tests are impossible.. His main goal is to trick you. The only thing that saved me were the quizzes and the open ended parts of the test. He also treats everyone like they are accounting majors and expects you to already have experience with accounting. I didn't take any accounting in high school so it was all new to me. He is just not a nice person and doesn't care about teaching.. he shouldn't be teaching fundamental classes, because he expects everyone to be on the same level as him.

Dr. Cairns is a horrible teacher. Anyone who has had this man will tell you that he is rude and totally unreasonable. He tells you in class that he will "blow you out of the water" on his exams. He teaches absolutely nothing during his lectures and has horrible mood swings on a very regular basis. This man has tenure so he basically does whatever he wants including belittling his students daily. He will talk to you more about the stock market and current events than accounting. I would have done much better if I simply taught myself from the book and never went to class. You've been warned.

This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. He teaches you zero and is all over the place. Coming to his class would be completely pointless if he didnt give you extra credit on the final for every day you're there.... don't be fooled by that though because the amount of extra credit he gives you will not even matter because his class is so hard! The only people that get anything out of his class are the ones who have no life and eat breathe and sleep accounting.....if you dont want to do that for a semester I advise you to stay as far away from Dr. Cairns as you can!!!!!!!!!!

To anyone who says that Cairns is fair: You're full of crap. Cairns is the most difficult and unfair professor I've ever had. The grading for the course is comprised of 3 tests and 7 quizzes. The quizzes are unannounced and absolutely ridiculous. They are designed to do nothing but hurt the grades of students, not help. His tests are deliberately deceptive and nearly every question is a "trick question". Extra credit is offered, but is a necessity to pass the class. Cairns is a nice guy in person, put when it comes to teaching, he's quite a jerk. His goal seems to be to fail as many students as possible. Maybe he gets paid for each one. Avoid this professor if at all possible. This man killed my GPA.

Cairns is a Very talented Accountant/Auditor but is absolute rubbish as a professor. Everyday he came to class without a care or clue to what we were covering. He starts every class with the Question, "Any Questions?", and if you are chosen make sure you make it a great one, because that will be the focal point of the entire class. If You don't ask a question or are not chosen, you will learn the entire book on your own. If you think the book is long when you purchase it, realize that you will be tested on all of it. Which he is quick to point out that the book is extremely flawed, but no reference is given to rely on. The Examination is 3 exams, 1 per month, that concludes with a cumulative final. They are multiple choice and application ( forms and journal, ext.). Go to the text site for multiple choice, and work a ton of exercises for the application. The Application is graded anal, and you need to justify and align perfect with a blank paper. If you work a lot of exercises they shouldn't be too hard. No note Card given for formulas, and if you ever feel that you should have taken someone else, you should Have. He teaches mostly upper level courses and I'm pretty sure he grades the same for all courses. It will hurt your grade in other courses from all of the work and you'll realize it was not worth it...

Dr. Carins is a nice person, and "appears" to be concerned. He is willing to give insight on the material to prepare for. His teaching is non-existant! He is a professor with a wealth of knowledge that comes out like a volcano that explodes with information. Watch out, because information is flying everywhere. Unfortunately, he does not teach any material outside of miniscule particles of information that can be grasped in time before it is gone. He will in a turbo-velocity rate, briefly discuss pieces of this and that, which are stated in the book. Yet manages to never cover any material that is useful in educating a student. Without a doubt, he is "all over the place," with whatever information comes spewing out of his mouth. If you want to know what comprehensive income is, or extraordinary income for example, teach yourself. Despite that it is information that you need to know, and will be tested on, you will not learn it from Dr. Carins. This is a teach yourself class, and sadly, there are no other professors teaching the class. I must admit, I receive a much better quality education at my two year school, than I did with the professors at Ship (there are some quality professors, so don't loose hope.). How is it, that a professor can receive their Ph.D. and teach, yet have NO CLUE about teaching? It seems to be a trend here at Ship!!

The man knows his stuff, however, he thinks you know as well as he does before stepping into his classroom. He flies through material, rambles off accounting terms people at H&R block wouldn't know, and his notes are terribly unorganized. He's usually not in his office at the time his hours are posted. If you have him at 5pm or later you'll never get to see him after class because he books it home before anyone can ask what the hell he just tried to teach. Tests seem easy when youre taking them, but then you get a 50 returned to you. You have to prepare at least 3 Hours before EVERY class like he says or you won't understand a thing. He doesn't realize that with 4 other classes and jobs, its really hard to dedicate that much time to a 300 level intermediate accounting course. Good Luck.

He is a smartass, and almost snobby, like if you do not understand accounting, you suck at life, (or so he makes you feel) and you don't deserve to be in his class or presence. Don't take him, college is stressful enough without having to deal with his bullshit. I swear he wrote the comment on this page about having to study for accounting, and bla bla bla. that is so something he would say. Like no kidding, don't you have to study for all classes?

Professor Cairns seems like a nice guy to me. He tries to make learning fun and he does, but to be honest I don't learn anything. He doesn't explain the problems or the lesson very well he blows them off like they're so easy but truth of the matter is students in the class who never had experience can't possibly think it's easy if they have never learned it. I study hard and put lots of time and effort in. I study the book, do all my homework, and study lecture notes. Still when I get the test he changes the problems so that they are much more difficult than the problems we've done before. He also expects us to know things we haven't gone over yet. I dread taking him for tax but am glad that's the last class I have to take with him. This class is going to kill my GPA...

Ok so I pretty much hate accounting, but I was required to take this class. Dr. Cairins teaches this class like you know everything about accounting (which I definitely don't). When I studied for the exams, I became really stressed out, but I managed to get by. You also have to collect tax articles from the Wall Street Journal which is a nice grade booster. He also allows you to do extra credit presentations on some of your articles. Overall, this class was OK. I'd say take someone else if you can, but he's usually the only one who teaches it.
