The class was ok, the lectures seem long becuase the prof has a very monotone voice, the tests were easy and he doesn't grade the assignments very hard. He does have an attendence policy which he strictly enforces. As long as you show up for class and do the work, you should be well off.

As long as you studied and did the homework this class wasn't bad. It was a little boring but it definitely wasn't my worst class. Professor Potts is a nice guy, too.

Subject: Worst class ever...  (Mar 24 2014, 03:39AM)

Professor Potts is the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't even seem to know what he is talking about. In the start I tried to participate but it was never the right answer. He also never gives you a direct answer he will say "well not really…" so annoying! I personally learned nothing in that class what so ever. You take 6 online tests which are open note so you think they would be easy-no. They are only about 20 questions but I would spend about hour and half trying to find the answer! I always failed them, and when trying to get help he never emailed me back. He assigns a bunch of articles to read as well. He has to curve everything for not being able to teach, because everyone would fail. Also on the final he allows you to have a cheat sheet. Didn't help I got, at 52/100 but it was curved to a B. Overall avoid him as your teacher. He seems like an alright guy, he just can not teach!

Subject: Anyone else  (Oct 18 2012, 03:08AM)

First off, Dr. Potts demonstrates that he understands sociology, but does a horrific job teaching it. Most of his class is discussion, which is fine, but he will ask questions that are worded so long that it is hard to follow. If no one answers he will just stare at you and ask another long worded question thinking he will get a better response. There was one person in my class who answered whenever they could and even cited the textbook, his exact words were "that's right, but not exactly". When no one answers further he goes on about another topic. Never answering his own question (this happened often) and I could not find anything in the book to help myself understand. He openly says he contradicts the book which makes it near impossible to follow and he jumps around topics. He assigns many online readings and we never discuss them. His exams are awful. Although he assigns only 2, the questions are literally given in paragraph form and is hard to understand what it is asking. Don't feel bad if you do bad on his exams because most of your class will probably do the same. In my class, I got the highest grade on the final (43%), and I still ended up with a B+ because the curve was that high. From his class, I still don't know what his definition of "sociology" is. Dr. Potts knows what he's talking about, but needs to start learning how to teach. I'm not trying to slam Dr. Potts because I "don't like him", but whatever method he has for teaching does not work. Anyone else would be a more effective teacher. Hope this helps.

I took Sociology as a gen ed thinking that it would be something interesting to learn about. However, I was unfortunately unaware of this website at the time and was stuck with Professor Potts. Do NOT get me wrong, he is such a nice guy and even brought us pizza at the end of the semester, but you will learn nothing. You are assigned readings for every class, which he then talks about, but you have no idea what he is saying. I don't know if it is his voice or what but he makes absolutely no sense. He will write one word on the board, circle it and that is it. If you plan on passing the midterm or final you will have to teach yourself, which is exactly what I ended up doing. Just do what you can to get another professor for this course or any other he teaches!!!

Dr. Potts is very boring and his classes are uninteresting. Lots of powerpoints, no life to it. His way of grading tests is interesting... I got a 68 and it was a B, a high B at that.

So Dr. Potts is probably the hardest professor to take in my opinion. I had him for a once a week class so that doesn't help. His lectures are long and boring and are about 90% unrelated to what's on his exams. His exams are extremely difficult, but he curves so my 70 turned out to be a B and the average exam grade was in the 50's. He has a strict attendance policy (for mine it was 1 unexcused absence). Avoid him if you can.

I definitely would not recommend this guy. First off, you have to come to class because he has a real strict attendence policy that screws you over. His lectures are extremely boring, and he tries to get the class involved but most of the time, he'd just ask a question and the class would sit there and stare at him for 5 minutes until he rearranged the question and then finally just called on someone. The tests were not that bad, multiple choice mostly. He did have A LOT of readings though that he posted on blackboard. It was a ridiculous amount that no one could ever keep up with. My advice, avoid taking him if you can.

The worst part about this class was that I always had to come because of his attendance policy. I think you're only allowed two unexcused absences before he starts docking your grade an entire percentage for all of the subsequent ones. I wouldn't have minded showing up so much if his lectures weren't so pointless. He just droned on speaking ambiguously and asking random questions until even the girl who was all enthusiastic at the beginning of the semester gave up and stopped volunteering her answers. The tests weren't that difficult though, he posted comprehension questions on blackboard which were helpful. He was pretty lax with the grading on the research paper as well. Basically, if you want to sit through 50 minutes of nothing 3 days a week and then teach yourself sociology by reading the book, then this class is perfect for you.

If you can get past his montone voice and Stephen King look, then you still will want to avoid this class! He does not answer questions, instead he gives another question! Nothing that you may say is ever correct, especially if you are a female! One can quote directly from the text and simply get a "well ok". There is A LOT of readings, a 7 page paper, and a student presentation. Attendance is mandatory, and I must say that I have had root canals more enjoyable than this class! If you can avoid this class PLEASE do!

Subject: Horrible!  (Dec 21 2005, 04:20PM)

The lectures given by this man were HORRID. He drones on and on and on in his monotone voice for the entire class period, writing little on the board. He requires a lot of non-textbook reading and expects a lot of in-class discussion. If you don't answer his questions, he gets very mad at the class. I felt very lost and confused most of the time. On the tests, his questions are so long and jarbled that I could barely understand what the actual question was. If you take him, GOOD LUCK. I do not recommend him at all...unless you like listening to Ben Stein ramble for 50-75 minutes.
