Dr. Culbertson is a professor who is genuinely passionate about teaching and its really awesome to be in a class with a professor who loves what they're doing. He is funny and makes the class laugh at least once a class. There are only two exams (a midterm and a final) and he gives you extremely detailed lists of terms you need to memorize and you have to memorize paintings (it's easier than it sounds). He also has a huge portion of extra credit on his exams--brought my exam grade up at least 6 points. You can also memorize origami to receive extra credit and its pretty fun! There's a field trip to the National Gallery in Washington DC and it's such a laid back trip, you can go wherever you want when you get there as long as you can get the assignment completed. I highly recommend this course and professor, it definitely made me appreciate art more!

I have taken Culbertson for many classes and he is amazing. He goes out of his way for all of his students. He truly cares about every one of them. He is a master at his medium which is clay. He went to the best school for ceramics. I'm not talking about a good school. I mean THE BEST GRAD SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY. To even be considered there you have to have true talent and he does. He breaks things down for you so that they are easy and will show you again if you need help. Just be prepared to do work and to think. If you make something ugly he doesn't care as long a you show that you put in effort. He is a bit disorganized but he does a lot of work. He has several grants that he works on, has a family, and does work for several galleries. Bottom line is if you take him for ceramics you are in luck. If you take him for a gen ed you might not like it, but then again if you probably won't like it with any prof.

Take him for the gen ed Art Appreciation. Despite the negative comments, it's actually incredibly easy if you show up and have a bit of common sense. Also, he gives several extra credit opportunities on each exam. TALK to him if things are going wrong. Be sincere and know that he has other things going on. I can't believe I have to say this, but treat him (and anyone else) as you'd like to be treated...approaching him while nagging isn't going to get you far. He's incredibly interesting, actually is a bit funny if you are not so stuck up, and is always willing to talk about anything you want. Just don't be an idiot and have an open mind when taking an art course.

Oh, my gosh... those of you who posted negative comments all took a gen ed... an art gen ed is always boring and sucks... Prof Culbertson is a true artist. He was literally born to create pottery and has an amazing gift at teaching others this craft. Ok, so maybe he isn't fun in a gen ed.. but hey.. if you were an amazing artist who worked with clay.. and all of a sudden you were told to teach a class that had nothing fun or creative about it and would only take away time from your true talent and passion... how enthusiastic would you be. SO, don't take him for gen eds if you don't want... but do NOT let yourself be scared away from taking ceramics. He is amazing with clay, and he will literally do ANYTHING for his students. This man must work like 80+ hours a week. He is the only teacher I have ever had that was truly worth my time and money.

The people who are giving neg. comments only took a gen ed with him... those are never fun. He specializes in ceramics, and is absolutely amazing. He will literally do ANYTHING to help you. I wanted to learn how to create a marble bowl, but I had no idea even how to carve a bowl. He went out of his way to help me create just what I wanted..... This is the first and only class I have ever taken that was truly worth the money....

Prof Culberston is pretty cool. He sometimes can come late to class for a few weeks 10-15 mins late. You have a few small assignments that he never gives back the grades. You go to DC for a trip which is alright and you have 2 exams that you gotta memorize a ton of terms and slides for. Make 3x5 cards and memorize the art work pieces. He is pretty laid back in general.

Prof. C is great! Only a fool would think he sucks. He's willing to do anything for his students, and lets us do whatever we want during work time. And yes, his slide shows are a bit boring, but if any of us actually decides we want to mimic a slide, he'd drop everything to make it happen. No negs for Culbertson! He's a great guy!

This professor was absolutely terrible. He effectively managed to piss of my entire class. In the 2nd month of classes he casually informed us that we needed 2 additional text books of about 90 dollars. He wanted us to have completed an assignment out of them by the next class. RIDICULOUS. He was also constantly disorganized. You'll never get a single thing back from him so don't expect to. He tells completely lame jokes and then laughs at himself for an hour. Honestly, one of the most disappointing, ridiculous profs I've ever had.

Prof. Culbertson is a joke... not literally because no one thought he was funny. He has two tests: a midterm and a final, and you have to memorize fifty slides: titles, artists, and their medium, need I say more. He posts a review and for our final he didn't even have half of the slides on the review. Sometimes he has no idea who the artist is and posts the wrong artist, so you're in trouble if you read the review, because it's the one in the book that you need. You have an online quiz every week almost, which is worded so strangely that as a college student you have to interpret as if it were a foreign language, and you might have a chance. D.C is horrible... stay near the bus, times change. They may just leave you there. Other then that take this class it's peachy.

Prof Culbertson is a sorry excuse for a professor. It's depressing to know that my tuition is going towards paying that tool to teach me nothing and give me more stress than needed for a Gen Ed course. This man was 10-15 minutes late almost every day. He was late the very first day. It kind of set the tone for the whole semester. The day before break he didn't even show up - which meant a lot of people, including myself, could've went home. He then proceeded to email us after he didn't show up, apologizing and saying that he was always there for us. But as most of the students who had him would agree that he does not respond to emails about anything that might be important. His lectures were boring beyond belief. He made you feel awkward when things in the artwork were sexual or drug related. At the beginning of the semester he posted quizzes regularly throughout the first half of the semester, which some of the questions could have more than one answer and were timed so you had to answer 29 questions in 20 minutes, but after the midterm, we only had two quizzes and they were posted the day before the final! He has made me hate art.

Prof. Culbertson is the most boring professor ever! His slide shows he puts up are so pointless. You could probably never show up to class, read your book, study the art works and artist, and titles and still get a good grade. The only bad part of that is, he takes attendance so if you miss more than 3 hours of this class he deducts off your final grade. Not only is his class boring, but his quizzes online are impossible. And...he never responds to e-mails, so don't count on that. If I were you, I wouldn't take him.

He is a nice guy but can't teach. He knows the material but he can't express the knowledge though teaching. All the papers we do for him are never returned. You don't know your grade b/c he won't hand stuff back. For the midterm and final, you need to know an unbelievable amount of artwork. All the quizzes are online and the answers are hard to find. Overall, he's a nice guy but he needs to find new ways of teaching.

Do not take this guy. His class isn't too hard but he is a moron. On our midterm he made a slideshow with some of the works we needed to study. That was great and all but he put down the wrong artists on the slides and screwed everybody up.

Prof. Culb. was a good guy & for not liking Art, this class wasn't all that bad. I had a night class so I hated it, but it might have been good as an hour 15 min class. Not a lot of assignments, just tons of online quizzes. And a lot of slides to memorize for the final and mid-term.
