Subject: Tulchin is the Man  (Jan 21 2015, 01:50AM)

What's not to love about a friendly tiny Jewish guy that's passionate about history? At first, I was unimpressed with Mr. Tulchin. I didn't understand the material, I wasn't doing well on the quizzes (one every friday but no tests is so sweet), and I wanted to drop out of the class. However, he WILL ensure you finish with a strong grade if you put time to every writing portfolio (there's only 4 and they're the most important part of the class) and frequently participate in class. I didn't even know what I was writing about most of the time, but I sounded legit and made it clear that I did put forth an honest effort. With Tulchin, if you make it clear that you put in an honest effort, you WILL finish with an awesome grade, even if you do poorly on the quizzes and do the HW last minute.

I liked not having a huge test and instead the mini quiz every Friday. The portfolios are easy, and the worksheets for every Monday are cake. He'll stamp/accept late work which is awesome! At first I thought he was a little off, but hes a nice guy just a little different haha. His main focus is working on thesis statements more than history. He definitely wants people to talk and participate but hes not going to flip out if no one says anything, just try to participate. He's a cool, nerdy dude, I'd take another class with him.

Professor Tulchin is the sweetest guy ever. He is so understanding, and is always willing to help you out. Also best part is he doesn't really believe in finals. You take a 20 question quiz every friday based on the documents you have read that week and the weeks reading. Even if you do bad on the quizzes it doesn't really matter. Every 4 weeks he makes you write a 2 page paper based on one of the documents you read. So you write a total of 4 papers. He grades them pretty easily and always tries to help everyone out. I always got B-A range with the papers. Also for the final you hand in your final paper, and take your last 20 question quiz and that is it! Its so nice. Overall he is a great professor, and I highly suggest taking him. I took him for his 105 and 106!

Professor Tulchin is a petite Jewish man with a high-pitch voice. The first week it'll be hard not to laugh just because of how feminine it sounds. He's a tad goofy, but what professor isn't? His class is super easy as long as you follow directions. There's quizzes every Friday, but they aren't too bad. He provides multiple ways of contacting him, and is more than willing to talk with you one-on-one if you need to do so. All in all, he wasn't effective whatsoever, but was very pleasant to be around.

Dr. Tulchin is a good teacher, he seems to care about his students and wants them to do well. His class is not hard you just have to pay attention and read the assignments. He has you write four one and a half page essays (really simple) and then submit them as a portfolio (sounds worse then it is). His class was difficult for me because sitting through the lectures was difficult but in all reality his class should be an easy A.

I'd definitely recommend him to anyone, in fact, I'm taking him for the second time this semester. When you first meet him, of course you'll make fun of the way he speaks, acts, and his nerdy glasses, but he grows on you. He's very knowledgeable and he doesn't lecture the full class period so you won't fall asleep. I have him for a Monday/Wednesday/Friday class and he pretty much sets it up so that each week Monday class will be the day you turn in homework, then get lectured, then go over the homework. Wednesdays will always be a lecture and usually a handout or bookwork, and then Fridays will always have a quiz and usually a lecture. The homework can be a little difficult, but it's just one worksheet a week. You do have to write a few essays but they only have to be 2 pages long, so it's not that bad. Overall, some days he's a bit boring, but he knows what he's talking about and you actually do learn. His quizzes are hard, but you could literally fail every quiz and pass the class because as long as you do your homework, essays, and attend class you'll be just fine. He also cancels class on Jewish holidays and when he's sick, which is often. A lot of people don't like him, but I have to give credit to him because he's always in a good mood, he's nice, and his awkwardness is usually really funny. He's one of the better professors at Shippensburg.

First off, we were assigned two books but really only used one. Basically the whole class is reading and analyzing primary source documents. You have a certain portion of both books that you are supposed to read before each week of class. Then we discussed them and did worksheets for points. Other than those worksheets, he has an essay for every week that he will post online. You have to do at least three essays before midterm and then three more before finals. You basically pick your three best essays from the first half and submit them again for the midterm and you pick the best three essays from the second half to submit for the final. We never had a test or anything like that. It is just in class work and the essays. As long as you at least skim the reading and stay current on the essays, this class is pretty easy. Tulchin is nice but can be a little annoying. He does try to make you think about things differently and to really learn about what life was like and not just facts.

Tulchin is easy. Every class you MIGHT have to answer a true or false question but if you go to class you'll get a point anyway. You have to write a total of at least 6 short essays. Midterm and final is just the essays. He's Jewish so no class on Jewish holidays.

In class essays do require you to read and it can be difficult to get an A on one unless you "quote the document" and give good specific details, but the blackboard quizzes if taken with a few ppl and they all have their books can be a very easy. Go to class and sign in or have someone sign you in cause unless you actually want to learn the in class notes don't mean much to your grade

This is a very easy class. You have a blackboard quiz once a week and a in class essay. He lets you use your book and bring notes in to the essay. Also the final is optional. The only downside is his class are pointless and very easy to skip. The only reason to show up is to write the essay or get the essay topic.

Tulchin is so great I'm taking him again next semester! What I like about him is that he actually understands that you have other classes! He is by far one of the most understanding profs I have found here at Ship. Also he doesn't make you read a lot of books, you skim them then write blog entries on the books. Out of three books, you write a paper on two of them and as long as it's a good topic, you can choose your own. He's not very hard and can be funny! Ha, he's from New York, 5 seconds feels like forever! I didn't learn a lot, but that's because I should have paid attention more. What I did learn though about history was pretty cool. He is so nice and understanding! Take him if you can!!! P.S. He didn't name his cat, someone else did.

I believe that this teacher is effective and, in my opinion, interesting. I have got a lot out of this class and in fact I took him for World History II. The only reason people dont like him is because he is hard, expects a lot out of them, and they dont want to do the work. Dr. Tulchin is an all around effective, interesting and great teacher.

Tulchin is a nice guy and he means well...but he is crazy. He doesn't keep track of anything and forgets to grade portfolios a lot. He gives weekly quizzes which everyone fails and he thinks "its ok". He only discusses things out of the A&O book...which isn't even on the quizzes. The class is pointless so you have to do all of the reading on your own outside of class and hope that you can remember something for the quiz. And if you try to argue a point...he will keep arguing with you until you just give in and say that he is right. If he doesn't like your opinions he wouldn't give you a good grade. Good luck.

You had to have a quiz every week on blackboard and an essay every week in class.. Even when knowing the essay answer and defending your views, you still only get a B, because Tulchin didn't agree with your opinion. The essays are very easy, yet he grades very hard and it is difficult to get any A's. Every quiz is 4 questions per chapter, often 8 questions and 2 chapters. They were extremely difficult, timed, and do not tell you what questions you got wrong. You get a grade and have no way of reviewing it. This course is very demanding and not very rewarding. The average quiz and essay scores were always either a C or lower when looking on blackboard at overall grades.

If his screechy voice doesn't bother you, his class will. The weekly blogs are freaking stupid. The only reason I got above a C is the quizzes that are given at the first weeks of the class. Do yourself a favor and find another prof.

I hated professor tulchins class. His class was an absolute waste of my time. The lectures were pointless and helped me not at all. We had to read almost all of the textbook within the first couple of weeks of class and then we had an online quiz at the end of the week that covered the 3-4 chapters we read during that week. I expected him to teach us the information that was going to be on the quiz but instead his lectures were pointless and had nothing to do with the quizzes. He is an awful grader on the papers too. Even though the papers are suppossed to be 4-5 pages he took off points on my paper because it wasn't long enough even though it was 4 pages long. He is the worst teacher ever and I would advise no one to take him!

Tulchin is a horrible professor. We were through the textbook within the first few weeks of class..and then we had to read 3 more HUGE books on top of that. He expects you to read like 200 pages in a few days. He is not a fair grader on papers b/c he grades on his opinion of the paper..not on whether your facts are right. His lectures are pointless..I think I was the only one that attended class regularly. NEVER TAKE HIM!

Overall, annoying while talking, his venacular consist of "umm kayy""rightttt""yesss""I'm from NY, so seconds feel like hours people..." and he talks about his cat annabell?!?  Horrible does not even begin to describe this guy's class. If you want to spend time reading books that are completely boring and hard to understand then take him.... otherwise beware. First couple of weeks you will read almost all of the Traditions and Encounters book. He assigned about 3-4 chapters out of this book every week with a quiz on it every friday. After that book there is 3 novels... YUCK! with blogs every week plus a paper on each book. Also going to class does not help you whatsoever, his lectures usually have very little information you would need for quizzes or blogs. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS TO HELP YOUR GPA!

I hate just thinking about this guy's class. He was the worst I've ever experienced and probably the worst on campus. His method of "teaching" was incredibly ineffective. He assigns at least three chapters a week and gives a quiz online (only reason I passed). After about 6 weeks you read 3 books which you have to give weekly blog entries on. Horrible idea. Everyone despised this guy. In class he would simply cover material that the book did not touch on enough. Complete waste of time considering it was not on quizzes or papers. Don't even get me started on this guy's voice. He sounds like Rusty from Mad TV and if youre familiar with this you'll find his lectures much more uplifting, if not enjoy the screechy, high-pitched nightmare that is his lecture. This [guy] should be fired...seriously.

Tulchin's class is not hard. Though if you are expecting a lecture when he actually TEACHES you facts, you're not going to get it. For HIS 105, the only thing you do during class is review over documents. you do not have exams, only quizzes every friday that are 20 questions long based off of reading assignments and random geography. He does count attendance, and every class he stamps completed work with a set date, when you eventually turn in, so you can't miss class without penalty.

Dr. Tulchin was easy but he knew what he was talking about. The class is very easy to skip just have someone else sign your name in on the attendance sheet. Lectures are pointless I never even took notes and I got a B. I had the class with 4 of my friends so we just took the blackboard quizzes together and helped each other out. He gives you the essay topic a week before so just write it before class and when you are supposed to write it in class just turn to another sheet of paper and doodle for 15 minutes and then turn in your essay. He knows you have other things going on so we never had homework other than the quizzes. I would say take him if you want and easy grade, you will get annoyed with him and his terrible lectures but it is easy.
