Everyone complains that this class is so hard and that she is a bad teacher when it is quite the contrary. Sure you have to work hard, but we are in college now and Bio is a demanding subject. She will take the time to help you if you ever have questions and your efforts do not get overlooked. If she knows you are trying she will be that much more willing to give easy grades and extra credit. When she says study two weeks in advance, listen because her advice is always crucial in doing well on the exams. I highly recommend her because I took a lot from this class.

Ferster is a pretty unique professor. She has ass long powerpoints but she usually gives huge hints about what will be on her quizzes and exams. Overall, if you just study her outlines and stuff you should be fine.

This is the only teacher I've commented about ever and I felt like I should because I was forced into taking Biology and was freaked out because I hadn't had it since 9th grade and I hated it. When I came on here and saw all the negative comments I just wanted to drop the class but thank god I didn't. The class is a little challenging, but any biology class is going to be that way if it's not your major. To be honest, Professor Ferster is an extremely nice lady and she really wants her students to do well. There are a few tests and quizzes every so often. BUT she tells you exactly what will be on them, all you have to do is look over notes. She puts outlines and powerpoints up on blackboard for every chapter and has a review session before each test. Yes, the class is a powerpoint lecture but she does try to break it up by showing videos from youtube that relate to topics. If after the first test you aren't doing well, don't worry about it. Seriously. After our first test she started doing extra credit vocab quizzes every week which were optional for you to take. She gives you the list of words ahead of time and she'll just add points onto your previous scores until she gets tired of it (which she doesn't). And if you tell her extra stuff on tests to show that you studied, she'll give you bonus points here and there. Right now I have a 106% in the class because of all the extra credit, it's ridiculous. She really wants everybody to get a good grade. It's really possible, I promise. As long as you just look over notes and the information she flat out tells you will be on tests and quizzes, you will know exactly what to study and will pass the class.

Ms. Ferster was a very nice lady in and outside of the class and she will even change the way she teaches to try to make the class easier but one thing she doesn't change is her Long, Drawn Out Powerpoint Lectures. Her class is not extremely difficult you just have to print out the powerpoints and outlines and go to class and pass her little quizzes and you should be fine.

I can't believe people think she's hard! Her class is so easy. I never paid attention in class, I would just read her slides online. Her quizzes are 5 questions and are super easy from the notes. She gives tons of extra credit and if you mess something up she lets you re-do it. Just respect her and give half the effort and you'll get a good grade. The only people who did badly were those who never came to class.

She really isn't that bad. Her voice is outrageously annoying, but she definitely cares about her students. Her notes are easy to understand and on blackboard. Don't take her as a first choice, but don't be pissed if that's your only choice.

Dr. Ferster is a good professor. She's very helpful, spends a lot of tme making her .ppt's, study guides, vocab. lists, and outlines so the class does better. She works well with bomb grades and really seems to only want her students to succeed and will do all she can to assure this. Her lectures (for this class, at least) can be a little dry, but she does what she can with the material. She's highly knowledgeable and attempts humor even at 9:00 in the morning (everyone's too tired to laugh). Overall, good professor, bad class.

She's an average professor, maybe above. Her classes are powerpoint and they end up on blackboard, so the only reason you should show up is for the quizzes. She lets you attend any one of her periods, which fits my schedule amazingly. Her exams are ridulously hard...nearly everyone failed the first one. However, she did let us make some points up so my grade went up. Overall, I would take her again because I would understand her teaching style the second time through.

She goes through her powerpoints really fast and you cant copy down any of the notes. I failed the first test so I asked for some extra credit or some extra points and her response was just wait and see what you get on the next test. Well I ended up failing the next one too so I had to withdraw from the class because there was only the final left and I felt as though I really had no other choice. Shes a really nice women but really not effective at all.

Subject: Take this class if you want to screw over ur GPA  (Jan 09 2009, 10:05AM)

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

At first, Betty seems to be a very nice lady. Her classes remained boring throughout the semester. But as time wears on with her 100 and some slide long powerpoints, Betty's true colors come out. She does at least two of them in a class period and goes Uber fast. And when you ask her to slow down or go back, she will, for three seconds, and then moves on, whether you're ready or not. I tried taking notes for awhile, but soon gave up when I realized that it was impossible to keep up with her. I tried printing out the powerpoints and adding notes in class- that failed too. That's how fast she moves. And her quizzes were easy, but her tests were impossible. And I started to notice that when you finished the test and handed it to her, as soon as your back was turned, she would look through your test and read ur answers and laugh at your stupidity. Maybe she needs to realize that she might understand all the stupid stuff she's teaching, but that doesn't mean that everyone else there does. DO NOT TAKE HER! My gpa was screwed over because of this class. And out of both of the Basic Bio classes, only 4 people passed. That has to tell you something. And did she curve the grade? NO! If you want to keep your grades and GPA up, do not take this class with her teaching it.

First off, She went through around 80 slides each class. I know because I printed them off because I couldn't keep up. She would read a slide, move on, read a slide, move on. There was absolutely no time to take notes. Even with them printed out I caught myself falling behind! Secondly, She is very liberal. She is really into evolution and is a tree hugger. Everything that is going extinct is directly related to us harming the environment. She does little to look at other viewpoints on that. She is determined that we are ruining everything and we are so terrible. She even tried to play an Al Gore trailer... Really? Over all, although she was willing to talk to you during office hours, I didn't like the class at all. And I usually like Biology.

13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

Be careful choosing this professor. If you DO NOT agree with Evolution, you will be very frustrated with her. She provides any evidence she can to support it, right or wrong, and completely puts down other explanations without giving them a fair chance. I found her methods very disrespectful to those who do not believe evolution to be valid. I mentioned this in my evaluation, and she has not changed. One of my friends had her a semester after me, and she was still just as disrespectful. Other than that, I found her class easy and boring. Her classes are almost nothing but PowerPoint lectures, which tend to be over 100 slides long, so this WILL drain your print quota. When I had her class, we had in-class quizzes, a few in-class assignments which counted as quizzes, a literature review, 3 exams, and a cumulative final. The only good thing was that I was exempted from the final because I had an A, which not many people did. If you're stuck in this class, don't panic. A lot of people found her class hard, but stick to the PowerPoints and you'll be fine.

This professor does not explain anything! She reads her power points so fast you can't even take down notes in time. If you ask a question she doesn't even try to explain it anymore she simply repeats what she already said. Every quiz is short answer and they are pretty hard. I would advise anyone to try not to take her for bio.

No matter how hard you try, you will fail every quiz. Myt friend and I had the same class together and study for this class all the time. She gives way too many slide for you to obtain. The quizzes are 10 or less question and you have to study over 150 slides of information. Its near impossible. I ended up dropping the class. As other comments have said she reads word for word from the slides. This class is way too stressful and will bring down your gpa. Good luck if you have her!

This lady was ridiculous... she gives you about 500 powerpoint slides to study for a test which you are expected to fail. I dont know how she can give the second and third exam after seeing the first exams' average grade which couldn't have been over a 70 and passing for that matter. She taught ecology, not problems of the environment... nobody cares about her major in ants and bugs and dumb sh*t like that. I even attended almost every class: that was no help. This is not a Gen Ed for sure. This class hurt me a lot.

12 of 37 students found this review helpful.

If this is a Gen. Ed. requirement for your major then stay away from this professor! She makes this course extremely hard for a Gen. Ed. and especially if you need the class for your requirements. Her classes are pointless to go to, because she has all the power points online on blackboard and thats all she does in class is go over the power points word for word. And the power points are like 50+ slides, and each test is on like 7 chapters, so you can figure that out how many slides you have. Also, she never explained herself when she was going over the material. She did however try and help us by having a review class before each test, but that didn't help because of all the material we had and how much of it there was. She gives random pop quizzes which are extremely hard, and which is the only way of earning points for your grade, unless you dedicate your whole life to this class. Her tests are unbelievably hard...they don't even cover what we went over in the power points. You don't even get your tests back to go and meet with her to ask her why you got questions wrong that you did. And, after the first test, there really isn't a point in caring anymore because the averages on the tests are F's, I think our class actually reached an average of a 65% on a test, and she thought that was excellent, which I'm sorry lady, thats a D. Honestly, there are so many more bad reasons as of why to not take this course, but please please stay away from her if you would like to get above a D, because if you take this prof. you wont get above a D, if you're lucky!!!

If this is a Gen Ed requirement for your major then stay as far away from this lady as possible. She makes this course incredibly difficult for a GenEd. She breezes through chapters (which is her reading off a 50+slide PowerPoint) in a 50 minute class. Her tests are ridiculous...they barely cover anything in her lectures..and the class avg. was a F. She gives random pop quizzes, which is your only feasible way of obtaining points in her class, unless you dedicate 99% of your time to studying for this class. I have too many other things and classes to worry about then to dedicate an entire semester to this crazy sh*t. TRUST ME...stay away. I am really surprised there aren't more negative ratings because I know for a fact pretty much EVERYONE in my class has a D or lower.

This professor knows her stuff but obviously has trouble teaching the material. Ferster reads off of powerpoint but doesn't offer much more explanation than what's in the presentation. She then tests you on completely different points and material than what she taught. It's ridiculus... Our last exam's average was 51%. I mean come on, wtf, this is problems with the environment not rocket science that will save people's lives here. Avoid her if you don't want to go to jail.

I have not had a biology class in five years and this class really made me work hard. She gives 10 point quizzes fairly often which can either make or break your grade so study for them. At first I was failing this class and I absolutely hated it, but then I talked to her and she gave me some pointers about studying and I ended up getting a 90% on the final. I would say that even though she gives a ton of notes in class, the ones that she posts on Blackboard ahead of time are really all that you need. However, don't just print the notes and not come to class. She will tell you in class almost exactly what is on the quizzes from the notes and will then use the quizzes for the final and the two exams. Good class in general, but I learned a lot.

At first I really thought I was going to fail the class. She does powerpoint after powerpoint and it is almost impossible to pay attention in her class. Her tests are sorta hard and she gives quizes usually once a week. BUT if you actually study you really will not do bad. She gives you a "jeoperdy" game before the tests and it is a fun, helpful way to study. And at the end of the semester she gives A LOT of extra credit opportunities...If you email her and show that you are interested and care about passing...she will help you do well. She isn't out to make everyone fail, maybe just to make students try a little. This class really isn't THAT bad if you put some effort into it.

Dr. Ferster was nice most of the time. There was just way too much material she tried to cover and a lot of information you needed for her exams were not in our notes. She used a 400-level book for my class, which didn't help understanding anything in a 100-level course.

Ferster's class isnt that bad. Beginning of the semester I did horrible until I realized how she taught. Her lectures are by powerpoint (print them off blackboard before you go to class... it will make life easier) and all the information for the test is in there. Her tests are a lot of information but her quizzes are simple. Her quizzes are supposed to be "pop-quizzes" but she normally tells you beforehand. She's real easy to talk to about things, I failed a test real bad and she gave me extra credit. So basically if you study and talk to her if you do bad on something, you'll do fine.
