Subject: By far the best professor at Ship  (Jan 23 2008, 05:08PM)

Languages were always difficult for me, but last semester, I began taking German 101 to fulfill a language requirement. It was an incredible experience. Professor Lynn was understanding and patient and more than willing to break things down and explain them. She pushed all of us to learn the language as best as we could and because of this, German was easy. I enjoyed the class so much that I took it again this semester simply because of Professor Lynn's wonderful teaching and my new love for the German language. If she hadn't taught the class, I can say without a doubt that I wouldn't be taking it this semester and it would not be my favorite class. She has made something that is generally very, very difficult for me into something that I can fully grasp and even enjoy. I know that many students in my German 101 class did not appreciate Professor Lynn and the difficult job that she had in front of her. Many did not participate, do their work, or even bother to show up. That's their problem, not hers. I hope that she is aware of the fact that the students that did show up greatly appreciated what she was doing for us and really enjoyed her class. And many of us continue to do so. I sincerely hope that she will be permitted to continue teaching here at Ship because if this is not the case, I honestly don't think I would want to take German again.

Professor Lynn certainly knows the German language and German culture very well, but she can also teach it very well. She uses a variety of methods to effectively teach a language many people think they will find quite difficult. She is helpful and determined to get each of her students to not only use German in the classroom, but also in common usage. It was, no doubt, a difficult course, but that is to be expected with this sort of material. She is very approachable and extremely helpful in her office hours. If you do not intend to attend class and participate, I would not bother taking a class which 1) depends on you being there and taking an active role in the learning and 2)has a professor which takes off 5% of your final grade for each class missed after the 3rd absence.

I reluctantly signed up to take a language because it is required for my major, and I must admit, I was dreading it. I took Spanish in high school and it was the one class that had really intimidated me. I thought that German would be the same way. However, I find Professor Lynn to be very patient, encouraging, and understanding. She is exceptionally knowledgable in her field and yet does not intimidate her students, as far as I can tell. She doesn't make you feel dumb when you make mistakes and she helps you figure out what you did wrong and patiently explains it to you. She has a very positive attitude and seems to enjoy her job. The class does require a lot of studying and preparation, at least on my part. However, I have found the class very enjoyable to my surprise and I really feel confident enough that I am seriously considering taking German again next semester. I think that had I had another professor who wasn't as understanding and patient, I would have hated German as much as I hated Spanish. I would definitely recommend Professor Lynn to anyone who struggles with learning languages and just needs a compassionate teacher. Kudos to whoever hired her. She makes an outstanding addition to the modern languages department.

If you want to know what type of teacher Prof. Lynn is, even I would not be able to tell you. This is because the entire semester that I have had her, I have yet to see her stand up in front of her class and teach us ANYTHING. This class consists of student presentation after student presentation. And the tests and quizzes themselves are also taken from the student presentation. I have a theory that Lynn does not know anything about German History, which is why she does not provide her classroom with knowledgeable information. If you do want to know facts about German culture, I advise you to read a textbook in our library, because I have yet to hear any useful information about Germany come out of her mouth. If you are looking for an easy A, by all means take this course. But if you are like me and appreciate a knowledgeable professor, find somebody/anybody else.

If you are beginning a language, take her!!! If you are continuing from somewhere else or a previous deutsch prof. HALT! Her style is such that it is almost impossible to change courses in the middle of the language, she is teaching German to German college students, using the style of teaching in Europe, while I applaud her efforts, I must say this: there are no lectures (or very few), "You need to just learn it" seems to be a favorite phrase. Be aware, you will put as much into her one class in order to pass as you will for all your other classes COMBINED. But if you are starting out, I am sure that she is definitely the way to go.
