He was my favorite teacher for the first semester! I really enjoyed his class. Sociology opened up my mind to new things, and he uses good examples to help you learn. If you need to take this class take him! Very cool guy.

He is a great teacher. You can tell he loves what he does, and relates to the class well. He has a really good personality which makes the class a lot more enjoyable. You have reading responses due fridays which are very easy and he has two midterms and a final. They are not hard, you just study the notes that he puts up on blackboard. I highly recommend him for a teacher, he is one of my favorites

He was a pretty good professor. He is fairly young so can relate to students a lot. He shows a lot of movies and tv shows (Weeds, The Wire etc) related to class. Class consists of 1 midterm (take home) and 1 final. Also there is 1 group presentation which was fairly easy. He seems to be very passionate about his job.

His class was easy and you learn a lot. There was a midterm and final, which you get study guides for and 6 papers which are 2 pages each and the last one was extra credit (20 pts). This class was very easy for an A and you learn a lot. So, I would take him again definitely.

3 separate grades determine your whole grade. Just go to class and study hard and you will do fine. He is very passionate about his teaching and you have to respect that. I recommend him for any soc. major.

Subject: He's fine but Soc is a BS class in general  (Dec 05 2008, 02:59PM)

Dr. Schoening is really laid back. Your grade is based on your tests and papers you write. His tests are all writing so make sure you know definitions. I got a B on the first test but I got an A on the second test because he made a study guide so you knew what terms to define and study. He also made one for the Final which is cumulative. I think sometimes he expected you to understand more than necessary for a general ed class but it really wasnt a bad class. Honestly it isnt his fault that Soc is a pretty boring course and all of the material is rather unsubstantial its not like a science or math course where anything can be proved. Oh and when you write your papers write with a liberal slant. Im extremely conservative which I included on my first paper and did badly so at least pretend to be a democrat for his class.

We did not have very many grades in his class, so if you fail one thing, it really hurts your grade. We did learn a lot, but you have to do a lot of work by yourself out of the classroom to study for your midterm and final. Those were the only tests that we had and we wrote 2 papers.
