Prof. Black knows history to a tee! He was a great prof. He did grade his papers hard but seriously just ask him for help during office hours which he is always available. If you don't bother to ask for help then you get whats coming to you. Overall awesome class.

Prof. Black is a great guy. He'll help you with anything that you need, and is pretty flexible except for things he obviously doesn't have control over. I had to go home early and was going to miss our midterm so he let me reschedule it. Again, he's very nice and best of all, he knows down to the detail what he's talking about. If something is confusing, he'll explain it to you until you can recite it verbatim yourself if that's what you need. Also, he's funny and has cool little-known-facts about history that really helps you remember what he's talking about. All his lectures are on blackboard and its in powerpoint form so you can just print them out and read over them before or after class and you're pretty much set to get a good grade.

He is a REALLY nice guy, and a good teacher. You only have two tests, a mid term and final. You have 11 quizzes, one every friday, but your lowest one is dropped. He assigns a lot of reading but hardly anyone does it. The worst part of this class are the 3 papers you have to do. They are kind of hard, but if you know how to do a primary source annalist you will be fine!... I suggest him, I am taking him again for world history 2

Honestly. For those who wrote the negative comments, understand that this man is a medieval enthusiast. His class was relatively difficult. I felt bad for withdrawing last minute, but I knew I could not have the time commitment that could be met for his course (course load including this class = 21 credit hours). If there are a couple of things I recognized, he is friendly, personable, and does not embody any satanic characteristic portraying horns out of his head. I give him the benefit of the doubt that this is his second upper-level course he taught at Shippensburg, and seeing as how he received a doctorate at one of the best medieval programs in Canada, he is not that bad. Grading was hard, but if you take his comments to heart and write better compositions the second time, one can see there is no problem. So, seriously: either be a slacker and work a full-time job at Wal Mart or pay attention to all that this man can offer. He is a difficult marker, but an exciting lecturer to know. I wish I could sit in on his lectures again.

Winston Black...coolest name EVER. Good professor, cares about his students, not boring, yada yada yada. The things you need to know are: TAKE NOTES, attend class, study your ass off for the exams, DO THE READINGS, and if all else fails, go to the tutoring center...they know what he wants you to study. If you're desperate, ask him about medieval torture devices....should buy you some time at least. :) Oh yeah he's not gay. He went to school in Toronto, which is why he dresses so well.

For his first year teaching, he was really good. Obviously a little corny with his jokes, but very good. He's a hard essay grader, but that's good for us, since no one's perfect! However, the rest of the class was pretty easy, just pay attention and look over your notes before a quiz and you'll be fine. I had little real quiz studying to do- though you should study for the exam since there's so much info on there. He was great when you needed to ask a question and always understanding, no matter how stupid the question was. Would recommend him to anyone.

Ignore everyone who says his classes are hard. He lectures from power point and he really knows his subject. He's interesting and very nice. He can be a little corny sometimes but overall he's one of the best professors I've had so far here. He asks you to read a lot, and there is one major essay but he lets you turn in a rough draft worth 20 points which he completely revises for you so its impossible not to get all the points on the final project.

God, talk about the best Professor out there for History! He claimed once that he didn't know anything much about what he was teaching (at that point in time) since his concentration was Medieval Europe, but he taught that topic like he studied that sh*t for his concentration. He is a hard professor when grading the essay(s), just because he is a History major doesn't mean he sucks at grammar, he's a stickler for good grammar! He has quizzes which are easy if you pay attention to the lecture and take notes. The class is dirt easy if you apply yourself. Also if there are any problems, email or go to his office hours, he is very understanding and sensitive to situations. If I could, I would take him for every History class.

So...this guy came in the first day, nervous like it was his first time teaching...He really knows his stuff and LOVES history. He'll tell you himself, he can go on and on about interesting parts of History you never knew...Honestly, he made me think about declaring a History Major. Lol a great guy that assigns a LOT of reading but discusses everything in class - attend EVERY class, take notes, be attentive...you'll pass. I'm taking him next semester for History II. Whoo...go for it, he's a good guy that really wants you to do well, and will do his best to cover all the information he presents. Take him, but do the work.

Prof Black is really passionate about what he teaches and he really knows his stuff. However, is class is extremely hard. I learned alot in his class, but I had to work really hard as well. If you are a history major, this is your teacher...anybody else, I would suggest someone else.

Prof. Black is the ideal professor that students hope to get. His syllabus looks long and tedious, which it sometimes can be. There is a lot of reading to do each week/night, but even if you can't make the reading that night, just showing up and listening to his lecture will catch you up. His essays can be hard, and you definitely can't wait until the night before and hope to pull an A. But, if you just do it even 2 or 3 days before its due and actually put effort in, you'll get an easy A for about 5 pages of work. His weekly essay quizzes are so simple if you just SHOW UP and LISTEN! It's that easy.. come to class and you'll get the attendance points, plus you won't need to study for his quizzes. For the midterm and the final, just read over your quizzes and you'll pass easily. That's it!

This class had the hardest grading on the exam essays that I have ever had. I guess the rest of the class was ok but the professor was just way too picky about grading every little detail.
