Dr. Sachleben is a master in the art of public speaking. He doesn't lecture; he tells a story. Not only that, he practically acts out the events which he is presenting! (Grounds for an Oscar if you ask me). From the start, he is very clear and thorough about what the course entails and how he runs it. There are a few outside articles he has you read but they should be an easy read for any dedicated college student. His tests have a few multiple choice, few short answer, and the occasional essay. Anybody with an interest in current events/politics should find this course very interesting and not difficult. His lectures are very well-paced and he doesn't rely solely on a powerpoint in order to teach the class. He is passionate about his subject but not at all arrogant. He relates to the students and encourages them to analyze and interpret lessons from International Politics. What amazes me the most is how fast the class went. The class was 75 min. long and yet it went by faster than any 50 min course I have ever taken! Dr. Sachleben is by far the greatest teacher I have had in my 14+ years of grade school. I'll be highly impressed if I find one that can surpass him.

I have never really liked politics, but Dr.Sachleben makes it fun to listen about. A lot of class discussion on current politics. There were two written exams and several out of class assignments which required listening to podcasts and reading online newspapers. He has a way of explaining politics that is hilariously layman's terms. He always throws in funny stories and examples, so don't be afraid to laugh if you think he is joking. I actually looked forward to going to class at 5pm on a Tuesday/Thursday! The grades are easy (our final had Monty Python on it) if you put in the little bit of effort he asks, and he has no problem being flexible or available. One of the best professors I've had at Ship. I would take him again in a heartbeat.

Sachleben is extremely cool, fair, fun, and enjoyable to listen to. He isn't a pushover so you have to do some work, but most of it is actually fun. He gives readings but everything on the test is from the notes so go to class. This guy is the man.

Entertaining guy... his lectures are effective at getting his point across but are also interesting in that they are stories. The guy knows his stuff.. his tests are pretty straightforward, but do study... they are not easy multiple choice, kind of tricky. You will do two class projects that are easy. I didn't even buy the book... He doesn't exactly teach by it. I would recommend him to anyone... I learned a lot in this class without working too incredibly hard.

Professor Sachleben was a super nice guy. He lectured the entire time but made his lectures sound more like a story than anything. He also tried to involve the class as much as possible but was totally okay if you just sat back and listened as well. There were 2 tests and a Final. I thought the tests were a bit tricky but not unbearable. There were also 2 projects but they were very easy. I definitely recommend taking him!

This guy is an amazing teacher. I wish he taught more classes than he does because I would take him over and over. His tests are easy if you study but I didn't study that much. He is so funny and interesting... I never missed his class and he gives a lot of extra credit. Great guy.

Dr. Sachleben straight up rocks (next semester I will have had him 3 semesters in a row if that tells you anything). He is so laid back and lectures the entire class but keeps you interested with stories and examples. His exams were multiple choice, had some words you would have to define, and an article you would have to read & relate to what you learned in class. There were also a few out of class assignments but they were easy as well. He's an incredible professor. If you don't take him at least once you're def. missing out.

It's difficult for me to imagine a teacher more capable of engaging a class in his area of expertise than Dr. Sachleben. This man is a multiple volume encyclopedia on political science, history, and even sociology in part, and his teaching methods feel like an episode out of a series on the History Channel. I had an easy intro level class with him, and I hear the difficulty ramps considerably in his upper level classes, but so what. This is a professor of the highest caliber. Just freaking take him.

Sachleben is a really interesting prof. Although he lectures the entire time, the class always went by really quickly. You have 3 tests (including a final) and 2 projects. He gives a lot of extra credit too. Overall, a really nice guy who truly cares about the subject he is teaching.

Subject: "Europe? What Do You Do With Them?"  (Dec 30 2008, 10:57PM)

Speaking completely off the record, I never thought a political science course would be as interesting as Dr. Sachleben's. Since I was hardly exposed to international politics, I thought I would face problems with European politics. In the end, I survived; the overall effect was what I learned with Europe's future and how their political roles reflect the world. We had one research design, a mid-term, a final, a book review and an article review focusing on one European country. Sachleben is energetic when it comes to lecturing, but understand that as the student, you have to write down EVERYTHING he talks about; there is no outline that indicates what will be discussed. One would agree that there is no way you can sleep in this class; Sachleben keeps people awake and tells exciting stories concerning Europe. If this class is offered in the future, anyone who has an interest in Europe should take it. I took the course because I wanted to know how European countries were able to overcome all the problems of their past--this was more of a "historical curiosity." Sachleben has changed my opinions of contemporary Europe, with a political and historical viewpoint, and he has given me inspiration to study the history of the European Union. His enthusiasm over the subject has helped me to realize that Europe has sparked political revolutions from the last couple of centuries; the direction that they show will be exciting for the 21st century. I cannot emphasize enough: please take Dr. Sachleben. Though the course work in the syllabus may seem disgruntling, his class is worth it. He is worth the tuition dollars to take. I wish I could have taken him again.

Dr. Sachleben's class was probably my favorite all semester. If you have any interest at all in International Relations, you will love this class. There are 2-3 tests and one or two little projects that are easy. He lectures a lot, but they are very interesting lectures! He has an amazing cache of stories associated with each topic. If you are a visual learner like I am, you'll appreciate Dr. S: He always has a visual example to go along with the concepts. He rewards and encourages active participation and discussions about current events, but if you want to just sit back and listen, he's okay with that, too. He also connects the concepts with current research that he is doing himself, which really adds to his credibility. He's also very friendly and was helpful when I went to him during office hours. If you just study for the relatively easy exams, you'll be fine grade-wise. There are also opportunities for extra credit. Not a bad choice to fulfill a gen ed requirement.

Dr. Sachleben is an extremely informed professor! He encourages students to think for themselves and to question all the aspects involved with International Law. He never makes you feel inferior for not knowing what he knows. His exams are extremely easy if you show up to class and pay attention, due mainly to the fact that his teaching method doesn't include boring powerpoints or sitting and reading his notes verbatim. He relates all course material to real life scenarios that will relate to the students. You will have to read journal articles in order to be prepared for the exams and in-class discussions, but if you skim over them and have an idea you'll do great! GREAT PROFESSOR TAKE HIM! I have taken him for 4 semesters in a row and currently have him now!

Dr. Sachleben is a really really really nice guy and his teaching style is very relaxed and easy going. He lectures but it is the type of lecture that isn't boring and it usually sounds like a story, which is cool. He loves for you to ask questions and to get involved in the class so just do it because he is really nice. There are three tests and one final, his tests are MC and short answer and they tend to be on the easy side and plus he grades easy too. There are a couple of assignments but they are not bad at all and they just help boost your grade anyways. I highly recommend taking him, he is just great!

Dr. Sachleben is not what you would call an easy teacher, but if you read the assignments and take good notes you will have no problems at all. He is really laid back and nice. His tests are not hard if you just read the assignments and study your notes. He explains things very thoroughly and encourages questions and comments during class! I would highly recommend him to anyone!!!! He is a really great guy.
