Subject: Very good professor for serious students  (Apr 06 2008, 06:20PM)

Dr. Miller is very knowledgeable in his field and he requires independent thought from his students. Because of this, many students give him a bad review - simply because they don't want to make an effort and would rather be given a good grade rather than doing something to earn it. Take Dr. Miller's class if you actually want to learn something, you won't regret it.

I guess if all you want to do is be a "happy go lucky college kid", he is not a good choice. And yes, this is not high school - you really need to step up and earn a good grade. Why even come to college if you hate to learn? A great professor is one who makes you think for yourself, not one who gives good grades for mediocre performance. I would take him again, any day.

I took his class Fall '07 and it was my worst experience of a prof at ship thus far. All the mean and negative comments posted so far are very accurate whether you got a good grade or not. I saw only 2 other students do well... they were History majors naturally. I am a straight A student and work very hard for my grades, but this man was horrible... he tried to teach us like we were graduates and expected our papers to be written like we were History Scholars. I thought my papers were well written and organized and I had perfect formatting, but he still gave me C's on my final and midterm... didn't give logical reasons I could read of course for why I had those grades... but at least he loved my presentation and I supposedly got an A on that. He really killed my GPA and is the reason why I didn't get Deans my first semester. My GPA right now would be 0.2 higher if it wasn't for this grade. Avoid at all costs unless you enjoy being treated unfairly or you know everything about History.

He rambles and does not teach. If he doesn't like the point or disagrees with the opinion presented there are no participation points awarded. He picks favorites in every class and people he degrades in every class. I literally received a paper last year that said "it is a good thing you are pretty." If you have a choice in the matter, DO NOT TAKE THIS BITTER MAN'S CLASS.

This teacher hasn't really done anything effective at all. He yells at us for not reading the materials then lectures us for taking down the wrong notes. In fact I just recently received an email from him with him lecturing me for not using proper email etiquette. My friend was in a hit and run and typed a very quick message to him to inform him I wasn't gonna be in class because of it and I get a lecture for not addressing it as "Dear Professor", or signing it "Sincerely". Here's the email.
Thank you for the note, I hope that your friend is okay. You can make up the quiz next week during office hours, MW 2:00 - 5:00 PM. And as a note, when communicating with any of your professors, please don't text message us without using capitals and proper grammer. I appreciate your desire to let me know why you were absent, but this type of communiciation, with no "Dear Professor," or "Professor Miller, no capitalized letters or grammer, and not even a "Sincerely, Shane," at the end is too casual and borders on being disrepectful. I know that it wasn't intended to be disrespectful, but I'm letting you know how this type of text message is received by most if not all of your professors. The same technological revolution that got us out of the Dark Ages with the invention of moveable type and the mechanical printing press seems ironically on the verge of returning us to a state of quasi-illiteracy via text messaging, so a little extra effort on your part goes a long way.
Sincerely,
Neil Miller
He is going completely out of his way to state in a forcibly articulated way that he is intellectually superior. It's the Professor's job to help the students and guide them not to enforce their superiority!!

DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! You will not learn anything in this class. You have to participate and if you don’t you wont get a good grade. He rambles on and on in class about nothing. I thought I couldn’t hate history any more then I did till I took his class. You wont be able to understand what he wants for your midterm and final paper. He will treat you like you are little kids. He is the worst professor ever. Do not NOT N-O-T take him!!!

This is what Peter Griffin would be like if he had a teaching degree. []If you don't participate in his class your grade is in trouble. Last I checked this isn't highschool. His midterm and final are just as ineffective as his rambling that me and my poor classmates have to listen to for 3 hours a week. This class will turn you from a happy go lucky college student into an angry maniac if you're not careful. The only time a smile ever crossed my face in his class is when he would stop mid-sentence to hack up a lung!!!

I've never been pissed off enough after taking a class to review the professor, but here I am. Miller is one of those professors who thinks that he is smarter than his simple minded students, and throughout the semester his arrogant and pompous nature shines through. His students don't like him and he can't seem to figure out why (he spent large chunks of several classes asking us why so many people dropped the course and didn't participate). Don't judge the entire history department based on the demeanor of this dick. []

If you value your sanity you will not take this professor. He was by far the worst professors of my college career. There are 3 grades for the class which is only worth 100 points. He grades tests like an Ivy league professor. Good luck getting above a B-.

Prof Miller is the worst prof at Ship. I made a mistake of taking him. You have to participate in his class if you want a good grade. For your mid-term and final you have to write a paper which was really hard because he did not clearly explain what he wanted. When he is not making you participate he is lecturing about stuff that is not even important. He also will not tell you your grades and he does not hand grades back, so you have no idea what your grade is. If you do not participate he will give you a pop quiz next class period. I already told as many people as I could not to take him. I struggled to get a C, and I'm a straight A student. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!

There are 3 grades in the class, mess up on one and you are done. Lectures all class long, can hardly understand him and rambles about pointless things. Seems to have no heart for students and doesn't care about them...DO NOT TAKE

Dr. Miller was not a very effective professor. I had him for history II so I still got a B, but if the material had been anything that I didn't already know my grade would have been much lower. He expects you to have everything read for each class, and had a quiz almost every day. He is not an easy grader on essays, either. This could be one of his positives; you are forced to not half ass your writing. If are not motivated to do work or cannot teach yourself stuff from a book, avoid this prof!
