I found Kathryn to be tough but fair. I learned a lot from the class and supervision sessions. There was a lot of work but it helped me learn the skills I needed to be a good counselor. She was supportive and gave very helpful feedback.

Dr. Newton is very knowledgeable on the subject of multicultural counseling, but she assigns a ridiculous amount of work. A typical week's assignment could include 100 pages of reading, a film, and 3 articles. Add the work required to complete an eight week project and you're stuck wondering why you even signed up for the class. That is a huge load of work for people who are attending school full time. Although I love the topic of multicultural counseling, it takes away from the class experience when you are continuously swamped with work.

Newton is a generally nice person, but tends to have an unrealistic view of a workload for graduate students. It's not like that was our only class for the semester or that we are all GA's or are full-time students with no job. Most of us either had 1 or 2 other classes to balance along with her's and either GA's or jobs to also worry about. Her class required a ridiculous amount of reading, which she said was even narrowed down from Jan's required readings for this class. Even if it was narrowed down, it was still too much. She also had the tendency to focus on some topics more than others, which left us wondering about things that we didn't cover. Of course, she's still a newer prof, so hopefully things will improve over time.
