Dr Cohen is a pretty cool dude and his class isn't all that hard. Don't listen to all those negative people either, they are just intimidated by how smart this guy actually is. He isn't around all the time, but if you catch him before or after class he always is willing to lend you a hand. As long as you do the homework done and study a bit, you will be easily able to pull a B.

I learned an amazing amount in this class, but it was because I love the subject and understood the pedagogical approach being taken. Cohen derives the concepts from differential form. Following the relevant chapters in a good physics text helps as the derivations are not needed to solve the problems on the tests or in the homework but the information is good. Read the text or an alternate text I do prefer the Sears and Zemansky book for these types of problems personally but the text used gives good examples.... read, practice, read practice and you will do well...

He puts a lot of work into his class and is a great person to talk to outside of class whenever you have a question. He may be late to class a lot, but it is for understandable reasons if you decide to ask him why. He home-schools three kids at his home and commutes a long way every day. People who rate him harshly should sit back and take a long look at themselves before criticizing him. If you go in to the class with a positive outlook you will not be disappointed.

This prof. is not good at teaching....BUT you CAN get a good grade in the course. All the exams are online, and are pretty similar to the study guides on BlackBoard. There is no need to actually attend the class either, he sends out e-mail on when the tests open on BB.

First off- you never have to come to class...ever! That's a big plus! Second- tests are on-line through Blackboard...use your book and notes! Third- the group paper was so easy! Finally- the tests are hard...even with the book, but I'd rather have a hard open book test than not. He frequently misses classes without any forewarning, but you don't have to show anyway! I liked it!

As long as you do the hw (and tutors will help you get all the answers right)and go to every lab, you'll do fine. I got an A in both lab and the hw, but did terrible on all his exams yet pulled off an A. I was terrified about taking physics, but he did a good job of making it not painful.

Very nice professor, when hes on campus he is helpful. But cut him a break, he homeschools his 4 kids in harrisburg. Good teacher if you're good at physics but is a little too smart to "teach" some people. Just go to class and read the book. Take him if you want to do well.

I am leaving this positive comment to even the score. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, of course. However, Dr. Cohen is not all that bad. Sure, he comes to class 10 to 15 minutes late EVERY class period, and often cancels class. Most Fridays are spent watching Physics movies. Very little lecturing is done. But, if you want to, you can learn some physics, and get a good grade as well. The homework is hard, but good prep for exams. The exams are 4 to 5 questions, and you don't even need to get the answers correct to get an A. Just "think well", and you'll do fine. I would say, however, that if you are serious about physics, take another prof.

I skipped the last 6 WEEKS of class. His test questions come straight from the cd so all you have to do is memorize the answers. You have to write a paper (in a group) which takes an hour max if you find the right 'sources'. Take him if you want an easy class.

I thought that Dr. Cohenís astronomy class wasnít hard at all. We had 4 cumulative tests, that have major curves. We also had a group paper and presentation, which he grades fairly easy. I know a lot of people in my class were failing when it was time to take the final, which I didnít quite understand why, because the class was so easy. I think I only needed a 55% on the final to keep an A, so if you study and actually read the book you will be fine.

See, I may be biased because I got to do his online course. Well, I should say I got to do it for half a semester. Now get this, the online course got cancelled because two students complained. One complained because they were too incompetent to actually use a computer... so how they got into college I have no idea. And the other complained because the online tests (which you had 24 hours to complete) weren't proctored. Who the hell are you people??? I love how it only takes one basket case with a voice to ruin things for everyone else. Anyway, his tests are open notebook, and I think he requires a paper at the end of the course. Pretty easy elective regardless of form.. but that online stuff was great. You could answer 4 questions.. then go eat or play a game.. then come back and answer another 4. I used my 24 hours everytime :).

Prof. Cohen shows up for class, doesn't teach you anything and then just starts doing problems on the board (gets about 2 done per class). He says there's no way for him to teach you how to do this, you have to keep practicing problems, which is complete crap, thats what his job is. He grades easy on exams because no one knows whats going on, but it makes it hard to do the homework and the labs. You can try to teach yourself, fail the exams and try to do the homework and pass the course, but if you want a good grade or want to learn anything about physics. take another professor.

Really, this guy is terrible. I really tried in his class. He didn't use the book at all. Often times he was 15-20 min late. He was overall a boring professor. He showed a powerpoint in class that he also put online. The tests were online also. I got all A's in High School, on his tests I got a C and a D, before I withdrew from the course. I didn't want my GPA to suffer because this professor can't teach. For the tests I used the powerpoints he gave us and tried to pull the answers from them, even researching the questions through google. Nothing worked and I still did poorly. I do not recommend this prof for anyone who is concerned about getting good grades!

I'm only into the 4th week of school and I already cannot stand this class. I skipped twice (once because I was actually sick). I always bring my laptop and just play games. This class is such a joke. It was chosen for me for a gen ed. course and I thought it would be interesting because I think space and stars and stuff are cool -- but he makes me hate them. Next week is the first exam and I just decided to read all 3 chapters before I take it because I didn't learn anything yet in class. His group assignment descriptions are very vague.

This was the WORST class I ever had at Ship. This guy doesn't teach. He simply stands at the board and does one very long problem for 50 minutes while you watch. Actually, its more like 40 or 35 minutes because he ALWAYS comes to class late, if he even bothers to come. THIS MAN CAN NOT TEACH. Somehow I got an A in the class. My average for the class was no higher than an 80. He had to curve that much because the grades were that bad. One funny thing though... He wears a silly little hat to every class. Go figure?

The man flat-out cannot teach. He screws up the whole day's worth of class because his notes make no sense and he says "forget what I just taught you." Your homework, which he can't make on his own, are impossible physics major problems from the U of Texas. He randomly cancels classes which is cool but he is late every single day of the year to make up for that. He is always late to labs and is never prepared for them either. If you do the homework, it will carry you to a good grade. You can fail all the tests and still be final exam exempt with the fact that 60% of your grade is homework. Avoid him if possible.

Cohen is very confusing. When he's giving notes on the board he skips the most improtant steps, like you're already supposed to know them. Also he is extremely lazy. He doesn't teach, he doesn't make his own homework assignments, but he does make his own tests. Of course since he doesn't teach it's kinda pointless. Basically he's the worst teacher I've ever had. If you have a choice, don't choose him.

I did not learn really anything in this class. I learned more from skipping class and reading the book on my own. Also, we only had one graded assignment which he never turned back into us. He shows up at least 10 min late to every class for a 50 min class, and he usually shows movies on Fridays. However, he just gave everybody As because I guess he felt that it was his fault for not teaching as well as he should have. I do not recommend this class even though I got an A without doing any work.

This is not a professor that you can learn from. In a three week period he did not show up for class a total of five times. All he does is have you take notes off the dome. Even those notes don't even help you for the exams. The exams are set up in a way that you will fail it. It's hard exams. He does not explain everything clearly in class (when he decides to show up). This class and professor is a waste of time and a waste of your tuition.

Well, what to put first. I'm not normally the complaining type and I can take a lot of slack from teachers after having to work with a few in the history department, but Dr. Cohen is ridiculous. I'm even the sort of nerd who finds him funny at times, but let's list the things he needs a little help in. 1.He can't teach (all you'll ever do in class is take notes from an overhead or on his computer that never seems to work) 2.Even if you acheive number one in flying colors, even writing somethings that he says during lectures, it means sh*t (the test questions will not incoporate the notes AT ALL!) 3.He's always late for class (once he was 14 minutes late!) 4.You watch movies all of the time and they have nothing to do with what you'll need to know later (if by some chance you get him or don't want the Russian professor, if you see a video, get up and run out of the classroom). And finally 5.ASTRONOMY IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS! IT IS A PHYSICS COURSE NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS! *ahem* Just thought you'd like to know.

Do you like teachers that are always late, do you like to sleep during class, well then take this class, but only if you want to fail every test or read ever page of the book which is about 35 pages per chapter and each page takes about 3 mins to read. One good thing is that he curves the tests and his grading scale is 85 and up is an A, 75 and up is a b and so on. People should get paid to sit through his classes, they are so boring and never teach you anything.

He's always late. Always. by at least 10 minutes or so. His objective doesnt seem to be to teach but to show you how smart he is. You never have any idea what is important info in the class and what is just jargon. He doesnt take attendance or know anybodys name. Also, when he "teaches", he turns off the light so its pitch black and has his labtop on the overhead so you can "marvel at his fantastic webpage so full of useful info". yeah right. you cant even see your notes in the dark and so everyone winds up taking naps. In my class, we had 4 exams. All were cumulative, and a group paper. On the upside, he does curve his tests since everyone fails him. All in all, this guy is impossible. stay the hell away from him.

Half way through the semester I stopped going to class, because you really don't need too. He points his powerpoints online and the tests are all online. Only one big assignment throughout the semester. Tests can be a little difficult just make sure you have his powerpoints available to use or do a little research for each question. When I went to class they were very boring because he just used powerpoints. But again, pretty easy professor to take.

I have no interest in physics whatsoever, but I needed one more science for my gen-eds, so I took this as a summer class. He never took attendance, and there were maybe 10 people there (out of 40 or so) at any class. 9 AM during the summer. Lovely. (I went because my boyfriend would throw me out of bed and make me go. He didn't believe me when I said attendance was kind of optional. Same boyfriend took the same class the following fall semester, and no lie, went to class the first week and that was it. Never again. Got an A.) Your grade is four exams--the questions are verbatim from the study questions on the CD--and one group paper, that takes MAYBE an hour, if you're drunk. The BF and me took his exams with the CD running on my computer and the exam running on his. Worked nicely. If you don't care about physics and need a decent grade in anything, this class is awesome.

Professor Cohen is a good person. He's really nice and has a good personality. But he's way too smart to be teaching a level one gen ed course. The class is the disk that you get and that's all. You could never go to class and still pass with an outstanding A. All the questions for his online tests are word for word off the disk, so all you have to do is print them out and have them next to you while you take the test. Honestly, he's a really nice person but his class is not effective at all. If you want to learn something about physics then don't take this class, but if you're a regular student who just needs it as a gen ed then this is your best bet.
