Subject: one of the better acc teachers  (Apr 01 2009, 09:17PM)

I will not say her class is easy... there are like 8 exams and they are like every other week. The exams are on 2 chapters each and it is hard because she will take off points for very minor mistakes. She is very strict with being on time and covering up your test questions. If you dont cover them up you lose 10 points on your test. She is very good at teaching accounting and does not overload you with work but MAKE SURE to keep up with work. She gives you homework papers and they are pretty close to the test. There are like 5 true and false, 5 multiple choice, and the rest is written out problems. I recommend this class because I have taken other accounting teachers and she was a lot better then all of them.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T EVER EVER EVER BE LATE FOR CLASS! She will embarrass you! She makes sure you understand everything as long as you go to her lab hours. The class truthfully is not hard as long as you don't miss ANY classes or very few. She is a very boring individual (duh, she's an accountant) but will do anything in her power to help. On tests, write out EVERY SINGLE FREAKIN' STEP! She wants to know that you know what you're doing. Loved the class, even though I'm a marketing major. PS-It is not much math, so if you're worried about it being math-intensive, don't sweat it. TAKE HER! :)

The Good - Patrick was clear and concise while teaching this class. She is extremely open to questions and will answer anything. I never went to the labs but probably would have gotten an A if I did. Good teacher overall, you learn the material and take the tests, pretty typical. The Bad - For some reason she will go ape sh*t if you come in to class late. She will yell and humiliate you and lock you out as well. I was scared of her enough to be on time. haha. I'm no psych major but she seems bi-polar...? or something. Patrick will be SUPER nice and friendly and then someone will walk in late and she will switch and scare the sh*t out of you. I would take her again because she is fair and easy to work with.

I really enjoyed Dr. Patrick's class. She has started making her lectures follow more with the book. Dr. Patrick will sometimes deviate from the book but she'll tell you so you know. There are no surprises on her tests, they are straight forward and from her lectures. The multiple choices are sometimes harder but they are mostly book definitions of words. She uses handouts which really teach you what you're doing. She also has an incredible amount of office hours (which she calls her labs). GO TO THE LABS! I went to most of the labs, even if I didn't have questions just to do my worksheets while she was there so I could ask questions. I also got to talk a lot to Dr. Patrick and she is really a very nice person. I would definitely suggest her but I'd also suggest you try to make it to one lab a week even for just an hour because they help so much! I'm actually thinking of declaring an accounting major because I liked this class so much.

Subject: Can be Frustrating but Makes you Learn   (Dec 05 2008, 12:01PM)

Dr. Patrick will show us how to do something once or twice. She will show you step-by-step, but after that she expects you to be able to do it yourself. This is not always possible if I did not attend class or take good notes. Then I am lost, but Dr. Patrick will not show me how to do it again. She makes me try to solve it myself first. This can be very frustrating. When this happens try to find a group of other frustrated people and we figure it out ourselves-- with no help from Dr. Patrick I might add. Maybe by the end of the class she will finally show us how to do it. It's one way to learn, but it can be frustrating!

This class is really hard. The tests are almost impossible. They are essay and she grades very hard. She also gives you lots of busy work and grades it hard. I was not doing well for a while, but my grade is finally coming together thanks to the test review we had the other day. First sign that she is human.

I have never in the three years at shippensburg had a better professor than Dr. Patrick. She was always there and gave her students every opportunity to get help. She also was available 24/7. I am not an accountant and she understands that not everyone is and makes it easy to learn and never tricks you on the exams. They are always fair. If you have the chance I would take her.

Dr. Patrick is a decent professor. Her tests are fairly easy. If you go to class and the labs you can get yourself at least a B in the class. She gives you handouts that are basically the same stuff as the test. The only thing I didn't like about her was how she would say all the time that the book didn't know what it was talking about. She would teach us her way of doing stuff, then when you would get to the test you would have to know the book way and her way. She always said "remember it for the test the way I taught you", but then you'd get to the test and it would be the way the book had it. Overall though, decent professor!

She prides herself on the fact that most of her students fail her course. She gives a lot of homework worksheets. Each student has to go up to the board 10 times a semester to put up homework. She will not hesitate to make you look like a dumb ass while you are up at the board. She has a lot of lab hours in which you can go and complete your homework with her. I went to her labs and she wouldn't help me if I had questions. It was so pointless!! She kept telling me she needed to see a better attempt in order to help me. The reason I was there was because I was confused and needed to ask her questions...but she didn't care at all. She is rude in class and even occasionally makes people cry. This is one of the most heartless ladies I have ever met i. My life.

Dr. Patrick's classes are extremely fast paced and she is a perfectionist. There is an exam every two weeks so there is no room to slack at any point. On the first exam I thought I did good and just made a few mistakes. Well those few little mistakes(wrong addition, forgetting one small fact, etc) cost me 30% of my grade. This is a fundamentals class, not prep for the CPA exam. There is so much information to memorize and she is not effective at teaching students. What would have been a good semester for me I instead felt ill and depressed because of this class. Most people drop after test #1 and over half fail in the end. Avoid her unless you are strong with accounting and a perfectionist.

Subject: Simply Should Not Be A Professor  (Oct 06 2011, 09:58PM)

Class:Financial Accounting (D)
13 of 38 students found this review helpful.

I am currently taking Dr. Patrick's Financial Accounting class and I do not understand how anyone could possibly write a good comment about her. The other day she sped through an ENTIRE lesson in less than 10 minutes JUST so she could pile on more homework for the next class. It was bad enough that hardly anyone knew how to do the previous lesson she taught in the time leading up to that, plus the majority of the class failed our recent test. You can't study from the (EXPENSIVE) book because she teaches her own way, and whatever she says goes. Don't try to challenge her on test questions because she will totally deny the fact that she wrote something wrong. Also, you can try your hardest to get partial credit for understanding some material, but she will give you no points for those efforts. Often when going over tests, she admits that she never went over some things but does nothing to remedy her mistakes. She has ridiculous practices and is paranoid about cheating. Her study sessions, which are practically required if you take this class, are at horrible times like 7:00 Friday nights. I am an A student and I took accounting in high school, and I am totally lost right now. The notes she scribbles on the board are all over the place, often mixed in with incorrect student answers from homework, so there's almost no basis to study from. She teaches like accounting is your life and you need to pick up every little word she says. Unless you are looking to become an accountant, this course has less relevance than calculus. I got an A in that class last semester... Aside from her teaching methods, she is not a very nice person. She can get nasty for no reason, and I despise going to her class. Tests are frequent. She may have a lot of time to spend helping students, but there's just not enough time in the day with other classes to get the amount of help you'll need. Very, very poor teacher, my worst yet. I give her an F.

She belittles students more than any professor I have ever met. She is an unfair grader if she does not like you... compare your tests with other students. She is a very hateful person and it comes out in the class room. If you do not cover your test enough for her liking, she actually takes off 10 points... what is this middle school?

This was an extremely frustrating class. The single most difficult part is that she teaches the material a completely different way than the book that she uses does. Then to review for her tests she assigns book work on what she taught BUT when you try and study with the book it teaches you a totally different way! So its impossible to study using anything other than notes. Patrick blazes through the material never stopping to breathe. In the end, it's a self taught class []. Just another failure in the US education system.

If the acct. dept. knew what was good for itself they would get rid of Dr. Patrick. She is the worst acct. prof I've had and she contradicts the book all the time. The only good thing is she is always available(because she has no life and lives accounting). Hopefully another prof. will be offered in the future for this class.

She doesn't want you to learn anything. I can't believe she is teaching an upper level class. I haven't LEARNED anything from this class. There is what the book says and what she says, but she can't even decide which one is right. I have never been so disappointed in a class in my life. She is available at anytime of the day. She eats and breathes accounting, but she forgets we have other classes. I just wanted to thank her for hurting my GPA. Way to help your Seniors leave on high note. No wonder not too many people want to go on to grad school with such a bad taste in their month from undergrad.

I have never had a professor try to belittle as much as she did in class for trying to participate. Also don't be late for class. She will make an example of you even if it is a minute. The big kicker is that it isn't even in the Syllabus about tardiness, so you are better off just skipping the class. She is just ridiculous when it comes to things like that. You will learn something, but she is never clear on a lot of things. She will change on a weekly time frame. I would only take her if I had to. I was very disappointed because I heard good things.

Simply put-She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not teach the material very well. She even told me class that we will not understand any of the material. She has study shops where you can go but makes them at the worst time if you are a commuter and have to work. Overall, I would stay away from this teacher.

Dr. Patrick ACC200 class has 6 Exams (each worth 100pts) a final exam (worth 10pts) and class participation (worth 10pts). In class we go over a chapter a week and have an exam every two weeks covering two chapters. Her exams are never shorter than 5 pages- generally composed of True and False, Multiple Choice and practical problems based off of the material learned in that particular chapter. My biggest complaint… IT IS A FAST CLASS and if you do not understand the material the first time around good luck trying to get her to explain it again. I could have done better in this class if I had committed more time to studying outside the classroom however, I had five other classes, not including ACC200, and a job,…. So if you have other commitments and activities that take a significant amount of time, you may want to look into taking this class with another prof. because this class is a black hole for time. Dr. Patrick is not a witch though, I do not agree with anyone who has anything negative to say about her personality. She is very blunt, and set in her ways, but she wants her students to succeed. The reason her class is so fast paced is because she does go through the ENTIRE book during the semester. She views getting through all of the material and understanding only half of it more important than going through half the material and understanding all of it. She does hold these “labs” later in the day where you can go and get extra help. I went to as many as I could and if there are a lot of people there, you are lucky if she talks to you once… and there are always a lot of people… I would still suggest that you go, because she does recognize effort- but when you go, if you do not know what you are doing, do yourself a favor and don’t hold your breath waiting on her, find another classmate who knows what is going on.

I had no idea what to expect when I first came in. Honestly, this teacher isn't horrible, she's just very demanding when it comes to work. I barely passed by the skin of my teeth because the tests were HARD. I mean, one word changes the answer completely in lots of multiple choice questions. Classwork wasn't bad though and she gave you plenty of FREE points for doing work. Take her at your own risk
