This is my first experience with any german, and she made this class so much more enjoyable! Very very very nice and always there to help. If she calls on you in class and you're not sure what or how to respond she'll work through the problem with you until your answer is correct. She's not very strict either, and makes things fun. Her tests are not very long and require usually only basic knowledge of the chapter it's on. Homework was mostly online which was fairly easy. Reading and looking over notes for a couple mins for each class period should definitely get you in the A and B range at the least. Awesome professor!

So the first day of class is overwhelming when she addresses you in German. But as long as you do the homework assignments you will learn what you need to. The beginning of every class she goes around the room and asks you things in German and you respond. If you don't know what she is asking or how to respond, she will help you out and its really great way to learn and retain what you learn. Her tests are pretty easy and she does give partial credit. She is always available if you need extra help. There is an oral exam at the end of the semester along with a final. The oral exam she doesn't grade that hard and you are allowed to have a cheat sheet for the final. Overall she is a very nice lady and her class is easy if you do the work. I had no German experience before this class and still did okay.

I must admit that when I learned that the previous German professor, Prof. Lynn, was being unfairly removed from her position, I was furious, to put it mildly. And I wasn't looking forward to this semester, or the new professor. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Dr. Grewling. At first, I was somewhat biased, however, when I finally made myself become more open-minded, I realized that she was in fact a very nice woman. She is very dedicated to her students and willing to explain concepts that we don't immediately understand more in depth. She is patient, and very encouraging, and pushes her students to become more involved in German. She is supportive and understanding about our apprehensiveness to speak the language, but she is trying to help us through that. Dr. Grewling also goes out of her way to encourage any interest in the German language or culture outside of class. I won't assume that everyone will find her classes easy; languages in general are very difficult to some people, but Dr. Grewling goes out of her way to help. Overall, she is very friendly and personable professor. I highly recommend her.

I'm stuck in Intermediate German right now to (hopefully) fill the language requirement. I want to help all of you that might want to take this language for fun - it isn't fun. The prof. is nice, but her classes are EXTREMELY HARD! By German II, she is already speaking in German most of the time! If you are 100% passionate about the language, then go for it. But be warned, anyone that is looking just to fill the requirement, take any other prof. or language! Do it for me!

I decided to take German with Prof Grewling when I wanted the Humanities credit. However, I ended up having to withdraw in mid-October because she CANNOT teach basic German. She's a very sweet lady and totally helpful outside the classroom but she also spoke in German...the WHOLE time. This was a basic class for kids who had never taken German before and she just could not get down to our level. I studied my ahem off and got a 68% on the first exam...one of the highest grades in the class. In her defense, she IS german and it's really hard to understand that people might not know the basics of a language that you have known since you first learned to speak. If you're taking her for an upper-level German class, I'm sure she'd be great but definitely try to avoid her for basic levels.

Subject: Don't Take Unless You've Had German Before  (Oct 08 2008, 02:02PM)

No lie, folks. If you have not had German before in High School, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! There is homework every day, but that is pretty much a given with a language class. The worst thing is that she moves SO FAST. The ones who had taken 2, 3, and 4 years of German in high school were pretty much setting the pace for the rest of the class. I had never taken German before and I was completely lost every day. 80% of what she says is in German EVEN ON THE FIRST DAY!!! She is an incredibly nice person, really, but she was basically teaching like we were a German II class or something!! On every exam, there were just as many Fs as As. And she wonders why! The people who've had German before got the As and the beginners got Fs!! I NEVER get Fs but I failed the first exam! She is pretty easy to get a hold of and she is incredibly nice, but the class is ridiculous.

I think Dr. Grewling is an incredibly nice person. Teachers that care that much about their students are few and far between, but I do have a few nit-picky things about her class. First of all, the pace is set a little too fast for comfort. Most of the people in my class had taken 2,3,even 4 years of German in high school, so I think they made Dr. Grewling think that everyone was really keeping up, but with my being an English major, I already have a rather large reading load, so I don't always have time to get her assignments done. She doesn't collect any homework or anything, but if you get behind, it is extremely hard to catch up with the pace. I was comfortable (if a little uncertain) in the beginning but after 3/4 of the class was over, I was so lost, I had to really study hard for her tests. I am not submitting a negative comment because she is willing to help anyone who asks her and she will go to whatever lengths you require in order to be sure that you understand the material. Take her if you have easy classes with not a lot of homework and you should be fine.
