He taught the class like it was a regular chem class. He did not teach the material very well at all. He said he knows this is Chemistry for a Cultural Approach but you need to do equations in order to understand chemistry. Overall, he is the worst professor I have had by far in my college career.

 1. He has a thick accent, you can't understand him
2. He talks to the chalkboard
3. He tests you on material that he teaches you AFTER the test
4. He gives you homework, and says if you want the answers you have to go to his office hours
5. He will constantly ask you why you're not understanding it.
6. He gets mad if you ask questions in class
7. His tests are short, but you have to answer about 7 questions for each problem, so if you can't do one you're screwed.
8. When you e-mail him, he gives you no feedback.
9. His final cumulative, with no study guide.
10. He is TERRIBLE.

The classes seamed easy. But everything he taught was no use... the book was not needed... it was a waste of 90 dollars. It was just him rambling for the class period then testing us on it every week or so. Not effective as a teacher.

Subject: Ridiculously unaware of what & who he is teaching  (Mar 30 2009, 12:13PM)

Class:Chemistry: A Cultural Approach (B)

Where to start. First, he did not realize the course he was teaching was Chemistry a Cultural Approach, and one day he even said out of frustration of teaching, "Why don't you understand, you are all chemistry majors...". At one point he "taught" us nuclear chemistry. Second, he made us buy the book, but he never used it, which leads me to my third point. HE DOES NOT FOLLOW ANY SCHEDULE OR SYLLABUS. I came to class everyday not knowing what to expect, what kind of preparation to do, NOTHING! I swear he pulled his lectures from the deep crevices of his..... Fourth: When he lectures, one, he has an accent, and with chemistry and scientific terms, you are almost always left in the dark of the correct spelling ( as to take notes correctly, and to later google those words to self teach what Kodwin failed to do); and two, he talks to the class as he writes on the chalkboard, so the only thing that can hear him is the board. Luckily I sat two rows behind him, but I felt bad for the people in the back. Fifth: His tests/quizzes were insane and showed a total ineptitude of what it takes to be a professor. They were not just hard, but the format as well was insane. For example, there may be 30 questions on a test, but the first one will ask a question and provide answers A - D. Then the questions from 2-4 will say "fill in the circle for the letter you provided for question number 1". To me, this is the easy way out of "teaching", and can easily screw you over. So in essence, there may be 30 graded questions on a test, but there are really only 10 original questions. Overall, I would recommend NOT taking him. He does not have organized thoughts or lectures, thinks he is teaching nuclear chemistry to general education students, cannot lecture, an. Is too lazy to make a dignified test.

So Dr. Kodwin is a visiting professor and man did I luck out getting him. He does not teach, but gives you the definitions and gives an answer to an example but not tell you how to get there. He tells you things won't be on the test and then has 1/3 of the test on that material. When you ask him for help outside of class he says he is too busy. What the hell you're a professor!!! You need to work with struggling kids. Chemistry is hard and this guy will not help.

The class is easy. I got a C because I skipped a ton. There are a lot of quizzes that are very easy, and let you not stress so much on doing well on the exams. Do NOT buy the book. I didn't and I was just fine. There were only 2 questions on the final that came from reading the book. That was is it. No other exams or quizzes required reading. If you want to spend over $100 to get a couple points, be my guest, but you are dumb.
