Dr. Thomas is a passionate biologist. Biology is not an easy course and can be very boring, however he does an exceptional job at teaching. Being active, easy to understand and pulling real life application and practical experience into the lecture, he really makes you appreciate biology. He has an amazing love of birds, which he will demonstrate throughout the semester. Would totally recommend him.

This professor knows what he is talking about and will get you actively involved with discussion. He goes at a fast pace, and his tests are definitely college level. But, if you take notes and study out of class, you should be fine. I would definitely recommend to take this teacher and class if you do not usually like science classes.

Principle of Biology is a hard class, and you really need to study in order to get a good grade but Dr. Thomas made the class really interesting and he does some wierd/funny things like stand on a table and show the mating dance of a bird. His lectures are from powerpoint and he posts them on blackboard after each class. The exams are all multiple choice and are based mostly on the powerpoints, but some stuff from the book. He gives extra credit through pop quizzes when a lot of people don't show up for class. The labs are easy, but the lab exams are tough, just make sure you copy everything into your lab notebook during lab and study from that and he also gives out study guides for lab. At the end of the semester he collects the lab notebooks and grades them. He's always around to help and answers your emails. I recommend Dr. Thomas, it was a great class and I learned a lot from it.

The class itself is hard. It's just a lot of memorization and information. He has all his powerpoints on blackboard and when you go to class he usually stresses what you need to know for the test. He offers a few extra credit opportunities. If you go to class he'll offer a few quizzes (usually when not many ppl are in class) that are all really easy questions like "what do you plan to do this weekend" as a question. His labs are easy too and you usually get out early.

His first year teaching at ship in Fall 08. Made a good on his promise to change the class if it wasn't working. It started out very hard and too fast of a pace. He realized this and slowed down. He also posted his lecture slides on blackboard. His tests are multiple choice and he gives extra credit. The lab for this class is very hard. A lot of work but a fair prof.

When you think of a great professor...you think of the kind that serves you bonus points like candy. You think of an easy class where no one learns anything. Dr. Thomas is none of those, but is truly a great professor! He once stood on a table in class and showed us the mating dance of the Lesser Prairie Chicken. (He's slightly obsessed with birds, but it's sometimes really cool.) Don't expect to just sit there and read from the book. You have to really work hard to pass, but you learn so much at the same time. I would recommend Dr. Thomas to anyone taking freshman biology.

I was really interested in taking animal physiology because I plan to be a vet tech when I graduate, but this class ended up being a real big bummer. It's not at all what I expected, and in fact is rather boring. Maybe it's the way Dr. Thomas teaches the material, but it just seems a little all over the place (especially in the beginning) and in the end, you feel like you haven't really learned anything of value. The class is fairly easy, it's just kinda boring. His notes are on blackboard but the powerpoints are like, 60 slides long each and half of the slides are just pictures or graphs. It just wastes paper but you can't edit the powerpoints to get rid of all the unneeded slides. So basically, I wouldn't recommend printing them but when you do get to class, be prepared to write fast because he assumes everyone has printed them so he flies through the information. But don't let that get you down, anything you miss you can just go back and fill in later using the slides online. The book isn't really needed to read or anything, but it does become slightly helpful as a resource for doing lab reports. If you don't want to buy the book, though, don't bother. I'm sure there are many other things out there you can use as sources of information for lab. Dr. Thomas himself is funny, although when you first meet him you'll probably think he's weird. He's overly enthusiastic about birds and practically every physiological process he talks about he finds a way to relate to birds. In the end, the class is just okay. Boring, not really as interesting as I thought it'd be, but fairly easy.
