I have had professor Melara now for a few higher level math classes. I'm not sure how he teaches the lower level classes (many profs are easier on classes they know are full of non-majors). I would say he is a decent teacher. The guy definitely knows his math, probably one of the most confident profs I've had at Ship. However, I have noticed that as the classes I take with him get harder, he is so concerned with covering all the material on the syllabus that he writes so fast on the board it is nearly impossible to keep up. He will skip all over the board, sometimes not going back to correct mistakes until he is through a problem that took at least 2 pages of notes to get on paper where as if he just went slower it wouldn't be an issue. He is a nice guy and his class is structured well so I would recommend him to most people, but be wary of taking him for some of the tougher classes if you are concerned about retaining the information once the class is done. Needless to say, it is extremely hard to get through some of these higher level classes without being able to take good notes. Expect a decent amount of "re-learning" on your own outside of class as you will only have time to write down roughly half of the notes.

Dr. Melara was one of my favorite professors at Ship. This was the first time I've looked forward to a math class since high school. He was able to both teach a rather difficult math course and still make it interesting. He's always in a great mood, and always ready to help any student out. He also knows a lot about mathematics, and can make even the most difficult concepts completely understandable without dumbing it down. Overall, he's a great teacher, and I would take him again if I had the opportunity.

Dr. Melara is a great math teacher. He reviews sample tests before the real test if the class would like and every class he asks if there are any questions about the hwk. Normally there are questions and he is willing to take as long as the class would like to ask them. I did not receive the grade I would have liked to because I am average at math. If you are good at math then I say you should be at least a B in his class. I recommend you take his class. It was one of my favorite classes this semester :)

I've always been a horrible student in math but Mr.Melara's teaching methods helped me understand the course information clearly and easily. He gives everyone more than enough time to do the homework and drops the lowest two homework grades. His tests are easy and come right from the material you are learning, no twists. The same goes for his quizzes. Great teacher, recommend and will take again if possible.

Subject: Knows his sh*t, but a little shaky  (Jan 09 2009, 11:51AM)

I had Dr. Melara for a higher math class so I'm not sure if he teaches the same way for lower math classes. Anywho, you can tell he knows a lot about math. However, when he gets in front of a class, he gets nervous and makes some mistakes on the board. The way he delivers the lecture definitely needs some work. The homework is easy because he assigns problems but you only have to do a select few and you get to choose which ones you do. The tests come straight from what you covered and he tells you exactly what's going to be on them. He is almost too available. He will email you to meet with him. Dr. Melara is a good professor and I would definitely take him again.
