Subject: Difficult, but a good teacher  (Mar 12 2014, 08:21PM)

Making an effort alone in this class won't get you a good grade. Your writing has to meet his standards which, unfortunately for most students, are very high. However if you make an effort to talk to him, especially outside of class, he will help you a great deal. If you want an easy writing course don't take him but if you are at all interested in improving your writing skills I highly recommend taking his class.

Professor Lawrenson, I believe, is new to ship. I had him for Intro to Lit. which turned out to be an all right class. The first day he came to class, he was wearing all black, but being the first day I thought nothing of it. Then, everyday to follow, and I mean everyday, he wore the same clothes, all black. Don't be put off by that, he is a very, VERY, smart man using history, art, and psychology to back up every answer he has. He is always willing to help you out. I had a group project which required us to meet with him outside of class. He came at 8 at night on a Monday night and close to 9 on another to work with our school schedule. He seems intimidating to talk to, but is actually quite pleasant and really funny to hold a conversation with. He knows how to "dumb" literature down to the average college student level by using a lot examples from movies, making it easy to understand. You have to read like 6 books during the course, (I think all of which are on spark notes and cliff notes so you don't really need to read them in depth) the only problem is you have to write a journal entry on the books that has to be like 2 pages long almost every week. It gets old. Tests are easy. Quizzes easy. Journals are not, he picks people randomly to read their journals. If you're lucky you get picked at the end of the semester and have improved your journal writing skills. Otherwise, you have two done at the beginning of the semester that suck and get a bad grade instead of 8 for him to choose from. Didn't mind going to class at all. Hell, we even got extra credit to come into class one day and watch groundhog day.

Subject: TAKE ANY OTHER TEACHER  (Dec 01 2013, 10:35PM)

The semester started with a full class of 30+ people and ended with 8... 20+ people had the sense to drop the class when they could. I wholly regret not dropping it when I had the chance. He never tells you what he wants in the papers, is a ridiculously difficult grader, an extremely awkward person, just don't take the class.

In high school I was always really good at writing until I got to this class. I cannot manage to get a high grade on any paper no matter how much time I spend on it. He expects us to already know how to write a paper like we're senior english majors. I will probably have to take WYFIS again because of this class. Awful. Aren't professors supposed to help us?

Professor Lawrenson expects you to already know how to write a scholarly paper. His expectations are ridiculous and unattainable. I never learned a thing in this class, I did however learn about his home life, which I could care less about. If you're thinking of taking him seriously don't. His class is the biggest joke ever. Like the other person stated if you go to him for help and have him help you fix your paper he will just find something else wrong. It's almost impossible to get above a C in his class it's really almost impossible to even get a C. Do not take him.

Subject: Think Twice Before Choosing Him  (Jan 28 2009, 04:08PM)

Lawrenson is very confusing. He has awkward comments that make the class uncomfortable to be in sometimes. If he tells you one thing about a paper, he will change his mind about it later. You will never know what he wants on his papers (he is never specific enough). You need to commit a lot of time to this class and it is very hard to get a decent grade. He grades harder than other WIFYS teachers,I have heard. If you go he will tell you what to fix and if you fix it then your paper will still be wrong. Overall....very hard, and confusing.
