I'm glad that I stumbled upon this site. I'm a grad... and I took her classes a few years ago. Because of her classes, and the language itself, I found a place working with a NY-based French import company. Not that I'm rocking a Bentley and a jet, but I have managed to land on my feet in this whole recession thing... Being able to be CCed on your boss's emails (and respond as needed) in French is an incredibly useful skill. And, you'll be amazed how many potential bosses are French... even in the states. It is truly shocking. Take and respect her classes. You'll thank yourself later.

I decided to write something here because I remember a conversation I had with an acquaintance, talking about our French professors. I spoke with awe and delight of mine and she spoke with disgust and annoyance... and then I realized we were talking about the same woman! This one, Prof. Mitaut. I'm not the perfect student. I flunked out of my 204, but the professor and I still have a rather good professor-student relationship. I visited her often and even with my terrible grades in my last class, she was still trying hard to find ways for me to get my grades up all last semester. The important thing is to TRY in her class. I don't mean with minimum effort, but to show that you're taking French because you WANT to learn it. Being of a foreign culture, I understand why she doesn't like when her students don't appreciate the language. She's tough because she WANTS you to learn and learning a language is so difficult. She's really a teacher for someone that wants to fall in love with the language and immerse themselves into it. I advise you, get to know Prof. Mitaut, let her know that you want to learn the language, and you'll find that you can learn valuable insight into the language and culture from a French native. :)

I read the negative comments about Dr.Mitaut before taking her French I class and was scared. However, she is the complete opposite of the rude comments. She's kind and not intimidating at all. She is very willing to work with you and always offers her help. All of her tests count as much as the online activities you have to do for homework which you can repeat as many times as you like for a good grade. She is very kind and always is willing to help. She is a great teacher, take her!

I loved Mitaut. I had her during her very first semester and then again in her third. Yeah, she WILL make fun of you and tear you to shreds if she thinks you're not trying. She's hilarious if you can understand her jokes (they're pretty much always in french) and if you make cracks and stuff during class, she'll probably like you more. Try to learn about french culture and show some interest. Out of all of my profs here at ship, I'd say she was one of, if not the most, caring I've had. WONDERFUL.

Dr. Mitaut is a good professor. She taught a lot more than I expected from only two semesters. I got D's in high school french which gave me pretty much no background to work with once I got here. After two semesters of her classes, I am easily capable of participating in a 30 minute conversation without using a single English word. She's very nice, easy-going, extremely helpful, and easy to reach. However, she does expect effort from her students - but really it doesn't take much. Study your vocab and answer/ask questions in class. Be polite. Don't walk in late - and if you do, pray to god she's in a good mood.

Thankfully, I had taken French in high school and knew a bit about it, or else I would have failed. Her mandatory Quia homework is killer, not to mention that speaking stuff in the computer room. Her final project is having a conversation with a partner in French in her office. SCARY STUFF! She either stares with her big brown eyes or writes frantically on her desk. She doesn't say anything, but just smiles. And in class, DO NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG. Like others have said, you better have done your homework and know fluent French AND can teach yourself perfectly or she will KILL you. She's a nice person, but coming from a four hour once a week teaching position to three times a week isn't good for her, or you. She expects WAY too much. She also doesn't give up until she gets the right answer. She will stare you down and wait, then start picking people. Do no hesitate, do not speak softly. It's a scary class, even for a girl who's taken French III in high school! RUN!

Subject: She Scares Me  (Apr 06 2009, 06:54PM)

Scariest professor ever. Do not ask questions, do not say anything wrong, always have your homework done, and speak fluent French is my advice for this class. Everyone in class fears her. She will flip out if you make a mistake (in beginning French!). She has literally said, "Are you stupid?" and "What's wrong with you?" and "This stuff is really easy." She is really nice outside of the classroom, but once you walk through those doors, its just tense. She teaches effectively, as an authentic citizen of France, but she is scary as hell. Everyone is afraid to ask questions or attempt to practice speaking because she will mock you and tear you to shreds if you make a single mistake. I dread this class- you never know what kind of mood she will be in. Sometimes she's happy and it's okay, then the next second she flips out and is angry for the rest of the class. Run away.

Well where do I start. She is probably one of the best French Professors I have ever had. Her classes were very interesting and I enjoyed them. On the other hand she treated the 204 class as if it were a 300 level course. The challenge was fun. You will be fine as long as you do the homework and read. Her classes are not a walk in the park but if you keep up with the work you will be fine. She greatly improved my french and taught me a lot. She is around when you need her. Very funny but also very sarcastic at times. Do not be late to her class!
