This class is rather basic, but does have some hard spots within the material. Bumbaugh is a very understanding prof. and is very available for questions and such. The bit of online homework was helpful and boosted the grade. The lectures were straight forward and the notes were available to study from. The tests were practically straight from the book and she usually gave you a chance to redo some of the questions for partial credit. Overall Very good prof.

Dr. B is the best professor I've taken at Shippensburg so far. Shes such a nice lady, and has great teaching techniques, the material you cover may be difficult, but she makes it easy to learn and is always willing to help. Always in her office willing to help and always has a smile on her face. I'll take her anytime I get a chance! TAKE HER

Dr. B is a really nice lady and knows a good deal about the subject. You don't thoroughly cover everything in class but she's always in her office and explains things much better there. She gives graded homeworks that really help for the test, as many of the exam questions were nearly identical to the hw ones. Everything is weighted, Each of 4 tests is 15%, quizzes and hw 20%, 3 formal labs 5% each, and a 5% easy presentation.

Dr. Bumbaugh was overall a pretty good professor. Her tests are by no means easy - definitely spend some good quality time studying for them. She had to even let us do a re-grade for one of our tests because literally everyone failed it. Her class is fairly straightforward - notes are on Blackboard but I highly recommend you go to class (print the notes out prior) and add extra notes to the slides because the bulk of what you need to know comes from what she says in lecture. She has a tendency to assign a bunch of little things like Blackboard quizzes (which you can attempt twice) and small assignments that become more like busy work. There was a lot of lab reports for this class (although it was probably a requirement of the course, not hers) which she's pretty strict about. Make sure you format things properly and explain stuff thoroughly otherwise you won't do as well as you think. Everything I'm saying might make her seem like a bad teacher but I actually liked her and am taking her again for Genetics next semester. She's just really nice and understands that it's a hard class (hence the re-grade and she gives extra credit opportunities, too) and she'll work with you so you do well in the class. Ask her for help, she's more than willing to answer any questions. I'd recommend her.

Great prof if ur taking an easy subject like basic bio. Never studied for that or came to class and got a B+. Now genetics is another subject. Her class is very dull and boring. She can explain the easy material very well but when it comes to the difficult material she sucks. While she is always available via office hrs or thru email, that doesn't mean she will answer your questions. Ex. My lab partner and I were working on a difficult assignment and I first emailed her a question about it and she sent me what seemed to be a long, not very helpful, but thought out answer. Later my partner emails her a completely different question about the subject and received the exact, copy and paste answer that I did (not the only instance). Another time I went to her to ask her if a detailed hypothesis was needed for our lab report. She stated, "This isn't really an expt. you can have a hypothesis for..." So I added a short and simple prediction just to be safe. Get the paper back and I had points taken off bc my hypothesis was vague...wtf?! Also tried to get tutoring for a lab assignment, but the tutor had no idea what to do b/c Bergsten didn't teach any of the material she was teaching! She is a nice lady, not saying shes impossible, but just be willing to work harder than you should have to!

Dr. Bumbaugh is a very nice lady, she helps if you ask for it. However, her class is extremely boring especially for the first 2 units. Her tests are killer, you need to start studying a week in advance or there's no way you're going to get better than a C. She allows for test corrections for 1/2 credit, but that doesn't really make up for how difficult they are. She does care and wants her students to learn. I just wish her tests weren't so difficult and it was easier to pay attention to her.

Subject: I hate genetics...  (Oct 26 2009, 05:04PM)

Dr. Bumbaugh's genetics course is NOT easy. The material starts out fairly simple and you think the course will be a breeze, but then as the semester progresses, you just become more and more confused and overwhelmed. Her tests are tricky and her homework problem sets are even trickier. I don't know if it's how she words the problems or if it's the genetics itself, but practically everyone has to go to her for help with them. Half the class period seems to be spent on her answering questions from student after student who just doesn't get it. She's a good teacher in that she's usually available to help you and is always willing to answer your questions. I really like her and she's so helpful, but yet the class quite simply sucks. Again, it might not be her teaching methods (I mean, I had her last year and got an A in her class) but just the genetics in general, but who knows. If you take her class, just be prepared to work.
