I'm rating Davis as neutral although I got a lot from his classes. One problem is that there is an incredibly subjective grading system. If you are a non-art major, you are not held to the same standards as an art major. If you show up to class and give the impression you are trying, you'll get an A or a B. If you're an art major and have talent, you'll be held to higher standards. This only serves to undermine the already weak SU art program. Too many students are in art classes who should not be there (including some who are art majors). With Davis you can BS your way to a better grade without never really doing much work. Overall, he is very knowledgable but believes that you learn by doing. While that is true, it's also good to be taught something for the money you're dishing out. Davis is not well-organized (check out his room in Huber- part studio ("his" studio), part apartment and a little space leftover for a classroom. Where else can you find a week old pot of soup next to printing equipment? Davis is also laid back and will not follow his syllabus. You'll get something out of his classes if you want to. Otherwise you can just goof around, do a little BS-ing and still get a good grade.
