If you're a history major or just a student eager to learn about post civil war/recent us history then this is a GREAT class. Prof Dessants is such a nice prof and person, and her class is totally worth it. It actually puts the history of this time in perspective and you'll learn a lot from her. I actually couldn't believe how she could just ramble off these dates, and know so much about the material....shes truly a great prof. I cant wait to take her for another class. And for the class itself....the other comments explain it, but make sure you review the midterm/final review sheets she gives you...and do them as you are learning the material...it will make studying a lot easier. And you WILL have to work for your grade, its not an easy class, and you do have to attend class, but its worth it.

I have decided to rate dr. dessants because I was reading over some of the negative and neutral comments, and quite frankly I don't know where they are coming from. Dr. Dessants is truly the best prof I have ever had here at ship, I have taken just about every prof in the history department, and she is by far the best. In fact I liked her so much that I am taking her class even though it does not fit into my schedule at all. It is the only class I have on mwf, so I drive an hour and a half (45 mins each way) minutes for her 50 min class. At the end of that 50 minute class, I am often shocked at how quickly it went by, she is truly a fascinating lecturer. She truly cares about her students just take the time to go see her in office hours and you will see. Ok so here is what you need to know. At the beginning of the semester she will lay out exactly how she plans to teach the class, and goes over what she expects of you. **don't be absent on Fridays, she hates that** usually in her lower level classes she takes points off for every absence past 2. It is really easy to remedy that though: come to class, after all you are paying for it, or your mom and dad are paying for it. Usually what you can expect for assignments/tests are as follows:
one mid term on weeks 1-7 (4 ids, 1 essay)
one final on weeks 8-15 (4 ids, 2 essays, one essay on the whole course)
Two analytical papers 5ish pages
an article abstract or two on a required reading
two or three reading quizzes on required novels: "these are not rocket science, they are reading comprehension" and she gives you a list of 15 potential questions, she picks 8 you pick 5 to answer.
and finally some type of oral presentation, whether it be a debate, a group presentation, or individual presentation.... 1000 pts for the semester, plenty of opportunity to do well.
She is very passionate about the material she teaches and she knows it very well. Not only does she know it very well she teaches it very well too. She hands out an outline for every topic, and then she lectures, it is very organized. **also as an aside, she 3 hole-punches every hand out she will ever give you, so using a 3 ring binder helps you stay very organized**. She usually supplements lectures with video clips. Class discussions are always fun and interesting. I will concede that there is what some consider to be an insane amount of reading ***here is a hint, sample the reading, you don't have to read every word in detail, she covers the important parts in further detail in lectures. Her grading style is fair I'd have to say, and is a direct reflection of how much work you put into the assignment. I think her tests are the hardest: admittedly she does expect you to learn a lot for her to ask you to answer 4 id questions and one essay. When you see her study guide it is usually upwards of 3 or 4 pages: it can be a bit overwhelming, but if you used the outline and took good notes, all you need to know is in your notes. All and all, whether it be for a world history class, or recent us, or upper level american history classes Dessants is the prof for you!

Prof. Dessants is my advisor. She was a great teacher. She taught all of the material really well, grades REALLY easily. Don't be scared by the books you have to read for her and her study guides. Maybe all of the material really just clicks for me but she is a great teacher, really nice and laid back and easy.

The semester is almost over and I am more than ready to end some of the classes that I have, except for Recent History of the US. I am a history major, but was NEVER into US History until I had Dessants (I was a Rennaissance and Holocaust freak), but Dr. Dessants taught the class in a way that was so enthralling and caught my attention. I can only hope that the rest of the history professors at Ship look to her as a model of what a professor should be. She is incredibly knowledgable and genuinely cares about her subject, which is more than I can say for some professors!

The semester is almost over and I am ready to get rid of most of the classes that I have now, except for my Recent History of the US class...I don't want it to end! And I know that people might attribute this comment to my being a history geek, but it isn't necessarily the class that keeps me so entertained...Dr. Dessants is just an all around good teacher who loves her subject and seems dedicated to it. I am a freshman and I had the same history teacher for three years straight in high school and though she is still my number one mentor, Dr. Dessants is another teacher that I aspire to be like...she is a great professor! Her class is not difficult if you work hard and the two study guides that you receive seem overwhelming at first, but I find that the easiest way to conquer them is to treat every term like a question and answer it. It will take a long time to do and a lot of dedication to the subject, but it got me an A on my midterm...take the advice or leave it

Dr. Dessants is one of the most enjoyable professors I've had and a credit to the history department. She knows a great deal about the subject matter and is clearly passionate about her interest. The class was everything I hoped it would be. We had one source paper (which she allowed us to choose, a joint debate with three other participants on your side, a midterm, and a final, and two quizzes. I highly recommend taking her as much as is possible, and I'm definitely planning to take her again.

Dr. Dessants "the teacher": She is amazing! She knows how to teach...and she has one of the most appealing demeanors about it-she loves what she does and it shows! The class was a pleasure to attend and I really missed it the few times I was absent (believe it or not!). Dr. Dessants "the workload": Not too bad really...2 novels which were very interesting and easily read and two quizzes on said novels. One novel with a critical reading paper...EZ stuff-very enjoyable. A debate...which freaked me out a little bit at first...but it wound up being a great part of the class and I liked it in the end! A Midterm and a Final- term id and essay. The mid term was only 50 minutes...so write fast and have a plan! Dr. Dessants "the person": Extremely accommodating and friendly! She is willing to do anything in her power to help you with anything she can! If you have the opportunity to have a class with her...TAKE IT! You will not regret it I promise you! She will bring the subject to life for you in a way that will help you retain what you learn! She also has a knack for getting you to think outside the norm...but in a way that ties into the broad picture. The nuances of history are normally left out of most classes...but Dr. Dessants' knowledge base is vast and she includes so much interesting info-it adds to the class a lot!

Prof. Dessants is a very effective professor. She's a little tough when it comes to grading papers but she's fair. The books we had to read for class weren't too boring, and the quizzes were easy, nothing you couldn't get out of cliff notes. Her exams are ID's and essays, which are pretty basic for history. The only problem is in a 50 minute class her exams could get too long to finish the essay. All in all though she is a great teacher and I highly suggest taking her as many times as possible.

After having history II with another teacher i realized how much I missed Professor Dessants. She lays it all out for you and makes everything come alive. Although she pretty much just lectures she gets quite involved and excited. Class notes are all on overhead and are easy to study from and actaully learn. The tests are pretty easy if you can write essays. As long as you know how to correctly organize a paragraph you will get half the points. She strongly emphasized opening, body paragraphs, closing....you know that sort of thing. There are quizzes every week that you have to read for but she gives you a few questions ahead of time that she chooses from so studying is easy and not very long. I Highly recomend this woman for a good education and a good grade.

Dr. Dessants is one of the nicest teachers at Shippensburg University. She always makes time for her students and emphazies seeing her after class if you need help. Her class is not hard to understand. She does however give alot of reading and quizes on them. Her test are not multiple choice. The midterms, quizes, and final are writen out test. As long as you do all your work and show effort you will pass with an A. Plus she gives alot of extra credit!!

This professor is one of the smartest ladies i know. She protrays history in interesting ways, that makes history interesting for all. You do a deabte with a group, about 3 papers, all of which she will read and edit for you as many times as needed before the paper is due. Her classes are interesting and fun. Take her she is well worth it.

Prof. D teaches with a passion, knows her stuff and does everything possible to help you - as long as you ask. She is extremely knowledgeable in both history and teacher education. Her exams are identifications and essays, but if you use her study guides and can write, you'll do well. She always requires a paper or two, but her books that she chooses are extremely interesting and most are real page-turners. Take her, you won't regret it.

First off, I hate history.. always have, always will. So of course I dreaded taking history, but Dessants is awesome! She may give a lot of busy work, but its for your own good and helps keep your grade up. Her book reports aren't bad either, and she'll even look over your rough draft for you! Her tests are identifications and essays and she gives you a (large) study guide that really gives you a good idea of what will be on the test. So even if you hate history, definately take Dessants!

Dr. Dessants is a very nice teacher. The class isnt bad it consists of 2 Test, 1 group presentation, and 3 papers. There is also One novel to read and you have little reading quizes every 2 weeks but they are easy because she will give you a handout of about 5 essays that they will be on and then she will pick one to give in class. She is always available outside of class and offers to help with profreading your papers for you as long as you get them too her a few days ahead of time. She grades fair, and I suggest taking her, because she is one of the Better History teachers.

I had Professor Dessants for World History I and I currently have her for World History II. She is very smart and knows like everything about History! Her tests are not too bad, they are all written identifications and an essay, and she is lenient with the grading as long as you support your answers with relative evidence. There are usually two or three small papers for the class, which aren't too bad either. She offers to proofread them if you get them to her a few days before they are due. So it can only help you out on your grade for the paper! She is also willing to help you out anytime you need it if you are having difficulties, just talk to her. I would definitely suggest taking her as she is one of the nicest and most helpful teachers I have had so far at SHIP.

Dr. Dessants is a very good History professor. She teaches the material in a very organized way. You can tell she loves teaching by the way she relates the material and the fact that her lectures are not boring. But, Dr Dessants comes off as being detached and uncaring about her students. She doesn't really help you in figuring out how to deal with issues that relate to the course. She leaves you out in the rain. Overall she knows how to teach and does it well, but she's not someone who will help you if you need it.

Dr. Dessnatsis a very good professor. She teaches in a very well organized way and she makes the class bearable. But, she can be a bitch... if u miss class it hurts your grade, even if u have a valid excuse. Also she really doesn't seem to care if students are having problems understanding or reading certain materials that she gives out. Overall she can teach really well but she is not that personable of a person and she can come off as being uncaring and detached from her students unless you kiss her ass... then you are one of her favorites.

Prof. Dessants is a very nice lady, sometimes. She likes things her way all the time and doesn't really help work problems out with you. Attendence DOES COUNT, and he takes it every class period. You have to write a lot of short papers that seem just to be busy work. Her classes keep you interested, but just sometimes seem pointless.

Dr. Dessants is nice and willing to help but the class is really boring because all she does is lecture. The study guides for tests are impossible because she gives like 100 terms and 50 essays to learn then you only have 8 terms(then you pick 4)and 2 essays (you pick 1) on the tests and she's real specific about detail so it's nearly impossible to memorize everything. I wouldn't take her again if I had a choice but if you like history she'd be alright.

Dr. Dessants is ok. Her class isn't very hard and neither are her tests, she gives a study guide that is HUGE and their is no way that you can know all of it but if you go over most of it you will probably get at least a B on the test. If she doesn't like you or you miss class more than 3 times you are sorta screwed. She takes off major points and that sucks. You have to read 2 books and write 2 papers and she is weird in the way that she grades them and basically they are just tedious. Take her if you must but try to get someone else if possible.
