Let me start off by saying this class is not interesting. Don't expect it to be unless you cream yourself over soils. That said it is a very easy course especially if you study. You don't need a book for the class and he is very accommodating. It should be an easy A if you pay attention in class, take notes on what he talks about not just the power point, and you study for tests. He even gives you nice outline study guides before every test. Take him you wont regret it.

Dr. Applegarth is a darn nice guy from the get-go. His sense of humor is hilarious, mostly because he tries so hard to be funny, not because the actual joke was...But anyway, this guy is always full of some interesting tid-bit, and the fact that he's traveled to the majority of the places he teaches about makes it a lot more fun to learn about. He has 2 or 3 in-class labs that you can work with a group (or by yourself) on, and if you don't finish, he gives you 'til the following class period to turn it in. His exams are all 40 questions, multiple choice, and he posts all his note outlines from class plus study guides on blackboard for everyone to access.

Applegarth is one of the coolest teachers at Ship. He has been all over the U.S and tells some funny stories. He tries to make the stuff interesting and gives some pretty wild examples. He has been through a lot in the past year and still keeps a good sense of humor. He does have a decked out S-10 like someone else stated... cold air intake, flowmaster, super chip....He is really easy to get along with and he loves talking about cars. I took him for a ride in my Mustang. Awesome prof I would retake him if I could

This man is awesome..as someone else stated he has been through a lot yet he still jokes and has fun in class. He explains things so that anyone can understand. He likes what he is talking about and knows his stuff. Applegarth has been to a lot of places and his stories are really funny. He likes cars so if you get the change talk to him about them...He rebuilt and engine in his truck and has a decked out S-10....if you can get this prof take him, best choice you can make

Dr. Applegarth is a hell of a nice guy. He goes out of his way to try to be available and is always willing to help. For the people who wrote negative comments, obviously they are not aware that in college you can't be a lazy ass. He has been through some though times lately and has managed to stay positive and I have a lot of respect for him because of that. He is also very good at giving visual explanations during class, which really helped me to understand. TAKE HIM his labs are easy, no attendance policy, and a nice guy who has traveled a lot.

Great Guy, Starts the semester by saying that if you only want a "D" in the class then dont show up except for exams. Doesnt make you buy a book for class, puts all his lectures on his website. Has done a lot with his life and relates it to the regions he is teaching. Labs are easy if you show up to class, same thing with exams. Very willing to help out students who COME TO HIM and ask for help. Definitely one of the easiest GenEds I have ever taken, would definitely take him again if I could

Applegarth is easily one of the nicest profs at Ship, hands down. He is also relatively easy as long as you go to class and pay attention. He tries to make the somewhat bland material interesting and does a pretty good job at it. He is the perfect man for the job since he's been just about everywhere that he teaches about. I'd recommend him to anyone

Dr. Applegarth is a really cool guy who makes class enjoyable for his students. I didn't think that I would have much fun learning about soil and rocks, but Dr. Applegarth used many pictures and examples in class that helped guide my understanding of the subject matter. He's been a lot of places and has many great stories to tell. He's also very lax about attendance. It's not required although I strongly suggest attending. Dr. Applegarth makes it well worth your while.

Dr. Applegarth is a great teacher who made class fun to come to. He had several interesting stories in relation to the places in the U.S. that we studied as he has been to several of those places. The class material is not that difficult, and the labs are fairly easy to do because he gives all the information needed to complete them right along with the lab. The tests weren't bad either, and the student talk was a piece of cake. And, we didn't have to buy the book, so that was a plus. I would definitely recommend this professor and this class for a good gen. ed. choice. Thanks for a great semester Dr. A. : )

Dr. Applegarth is an extremely nice guy. However, he can be quite boring considering that you get the powerpoints ahead of time and just follow along. His tests are pretty easy if you know the information. The project is probably one of the easiest i've done here at ship. All you do is make powerpoints and read them to the class. I'd recommend taking him for an easy grade!

Dr. Applegarth is an awesome prof! While his classes can get boring sometimes (but then again, how can soils be interesting?), he tries to make it fun by telling funny stories and showing pictures. He explains things in ways that you can understand them. As for the incomplete sentences... people, they are called NOTES. That's what notes are. And, if you don't understand them... ASK him. he loves it when students ask questions. Bascially, you have to be borderline mentally retarded to not get an A or B because if you don't understand anything, ask him, he will either tell you the answer or explain it in a way you understand. Take him if you can!

Mostly positive, somewhat neutral. He knows what he's talking about but has a hard time portraying it to the class sometimes. The labs are ok, they take some brain power and time but are pretty step by step. Everyone thought the tests were hard but all I ever did was study the notes and I did pretty well, (low A, high B). DONT BUY THE BOOK! you dont need it!!! You'll do well if you just go and try to understand what he's talking about. I had no idea what remote sensing was when I entered the class, and now I have a basic idea of what's going on.

I enjoyed this class. Dr.Applegarth presented the material mostly through powerpoint slides. His grades are based on some tests, homework, and a presentation with or without a group. He really enjoys cars which you will probably hear if you take him. I did not find the class too difficult as long as you take notes and study the material on your own. I recommend him if you have to take an earth science gen.ed class!

he lets you download the notes from his website and only uses them plus lecture notes on tests, no book. The tests were all 40 MC and quite easy, no roll taken but i recommend going as he does use stuff that are talked about in class but not on the downloaded notes. 3 tests and a 5-10min presentation at the end are all that he assigns. Overall he is a good teacher and knows what he is taling about.

He was a new teacher when i had him, he is a little boring, but that might just be the subject matter, he made the class pretty easy, puts up lots of power point shows and the test are taken almost exclusivly from the presentations(maybe 5 questions from book). 1 presentation, which isn't too diffucult. If you get the notes and study for all the test and do the presentation you will get a good grade.

I wish I had an excuse to take another class with Dr. Applegarth. He relates well to college-aged students and really tries to make class interesting by telling stories about all the places he's been. Everyday notes are given during a power point presentation. There are 3 or 4 tests, multiple choice, and fairly easy if you pay attention in class. I bought the book for the class but never even opened it. I suggest everyone try to take this prof at least once.

I am a straight A student but, this semester because of Applegarth's class I have all A's and an F. His class is a waste of time and energy. You can study and take notes and even use the study guide all you want but it wont help. His pointless lectures are always about himself and his adventures instead of the material he is testing us on. And don't even think about going to him for additional help because he barely knows what he is talking about. He does not offer ANY extra credit and he has less than 10 graded assignments in his class. I dropped his class because its a GPA destroyer. Other than his class I have straight A's and I'm a BIO major. Save yourself, don't take his class. Id rather have an 8am.

Ok this guy really doesn't understand that not everyone tests well. His class was 400 points, 100 each for 3 tests, 60 for labs, and 40 for a student talk. I got F's on all the tests and the only reason I didn't get an F was because I got perfect scores on everything else. So it wasn't because I didn't understand the material that I didn't get an A. It was his lack of giving opportunities to earn extra credit points.

Dr. Applegarth is a waste of a prof. His lecture is all powerpoint and the notes to follow along with are online. Easy right? WRONG!!! First off, the man can't write a sentence to save his life. Second, if you suck at science, his scientific words make no sense to you. He gives examples that only the car-loving jocks can understand. I'm sorry, but trying to use a radiator cap example to explain wind does not help me. You think his labs are easy and you end up with 10/15 on them all. And the best part is when you ask him or the grad assistant to check if your lab is all right, they'll say it is and then you'll still get a shitty grade. Tests are impossible and each MC question is worth 3 points, so if you get 1 or 2 wrong, you're basically screwed. The stupid student talk he gives is ridiculous and he takes points off if it's not 10 minutes. He didn't even pay attention to my presentation...I saw him starting off into space during. He's obsessed with Arizona and all the examples he gives are about Arizona. Bottom line, just avoid him at all costs. He's a nice guy usually, but not a good teacher.

Dr. Applegarth is a hell of a nice guy and he is very accomodating, but i had a difficult time paying attention in his class. If you're thing is learning from power point presentations and occasionally passing around rocks or soil, then take him. But if you have a short attention span and like a class to be interesting then i don't recommend it - I was so incredibly bored and though the subject matter is boring i just think that he should have done more to make it more interesting.

This guy is ok. The powerpoint notes can be hard to comprehend because he doesn't write in full sentences and if you are like me and not good with the sciences, this can prove to be a problem! Tests can be a challenge, make sure to look over the handouts depicting graphs and things of that nature. Nonetheless, he is readily available should you need to go see him, and always responds promptly to email.
