First off don't run away from this class. The first day he gives you a syllabus 20 pages long.... IT LIKE GIGANTIC!! and your thinking holy hell what did I get my self into. I am a freshmen and I won't lie Dr. France is intimidating and verrryyyyy meticulous. However, if you participate and work towards understanding the mental health consumers ;France will reward you with knowledge. I love Dr.France so much. Everyone gets frustrated with him because he is so thorough, but do you really want a professor who hands you A's and has no idea how direct a class? Listen I know my abnormal psych like the back of my hands, and yes Dr. France has mad me stutter and rethink my answers multiple of times , but I personally am grateful for that because it means he is challenging me and pushing me towards further expanding my knowledge. Dr.France takes sometime to warm up to and he expects a lot. personally I know I will not ever regret taking his class. BUT WARNING!! if you don't want to understand others besides yourself, and you don't want to put the work in then this class isn't for you.

The only way you can do bad in this class is if you think you can walk through it. Wrong, you're going to have to put on your big kid pants and work for your grade. Here's the secret to passing the class, follow the syllabus and his comments EXACTLY. He is very particular, but is more willing to help than most teachers at Ship. Give him exactly what he wants and you will pass. I know he seems very intimidating (he is) but he is a very nice guy. Give him a chance, I'm declaring a psych minor because of this class, he really does make the subject interesting.

So last semester I took abnormal psych with Dr. France. Yes, the syllabus is intimidating but he tells you exactly what he wants from you and if you follow everything he says you are basically guaranteed an A in the class. Dr. France is honestly the most intelligent person I have ever met. He may seem cold at first, but he will definitely warm up. I would take this class every semester if I had the chance.

Subject: One of My Favorite Classes  (Nov 03 2010, 12:30AM)

Dr. France is pretty intimidating on the first day of class, handing out a syllabus a million pages long and telling you about the massive project that you have to do with very vague details. But DO NOT DROP IT! The syllabus is extremely long because he is just very thorough and lays everything you will need to know out on the first day, instead of handing out instruction worksheets throughout the semester. He's a very kind and quiet man, and if you meet with him outside of class, he'll be more than willing to try to help you. Yes, he gives you constructive criticism. If you can't deal with that, you may think he's an ass. But he just really wants his students to learn and develop a positive outlook of the "consumers" that you will work with. The project is kind of time consuming, but it's so relevant to what a job will be like. It was probably my favorite thing that I've taken part in since being at Ship. The actual classes are interesting and don't involve much work, but you'll take away so much from this class. Definitely take it with Dr. France.

Subject: Things to Know  (Mar 23 2010, 01:05PM)

Class:Person to Person (A)

Alright kids, Dr. France does present you with some challenges...but if you are thinking about becoming a counselor or think you have interest in the field, I HIGHLY recommend him. His class WILL teach you the things you need to know to feel comfortable interviewing clients. It will get you out of your comfort zone, that's for sure, but without that experience, it's near impossible to receive the training you need as a Psychology major. If you are planning on taking Dr. France, keep a few things in mind:
1. Always have a question/issue to ask for each chapter, he shows great disdain for your actions if you do not show the effort to read or bring up a topic that you think needs discussing.
2. If you forget the homework, forget to read or need extra time to complete a project, TELL HIM BEFORE THE CLASS STARTS. If he comes around and sees you do not have your homework, he is not happy with you. If you say "I forgot the homework, I'm sorry" before class he will simply say "Bring it next time".
3. When he talks to you about your role plays, he is not trying to insult you. His motive is purely to constructively criticize so you can improve for next time. He understands it's scary and he is there to help you if you need it.
4. If you are sick, tell him. He is not going to make you feel bad about being unhealthy, in fact, he'd rather you NOT come to class if you are not fit to participate in role plays. He may ask you to write a short paper on the day's material, but nothing more than a page.
5. ALWAYS CHOSE THE UNGRADED OPTION FOR THE PAPER. Unless you want to spend day after day editing a 7+ page paper just so you can get a few extra points, don't bother, it is best to focus on your reflections and feeling words in your role plays.
6. The syllabus is thick and lengthy, but don't be intimidated, he is an INCREDIBLY nice man and is willing to explain ANY question you ask him.
Good luck!

I've never written comments on any professors before, but after seeing the negative ones here I felt I needed to. Yes, there is a big project and it requires some travel, but only to Chambersburg once a week for 9 weeks and you have a group to split the driving with. The project seems confusing at first, but he does make it clearer later on. There are no exams, and if you mess up a paper all you have to do is fix specifically what he points out and you'll get full credit (IF he collects it, a lot of stuff is peer reviewed). Couldn't get it done in time? Turn it in next class. If you do poorly then you probably had it coming for either being lazy or screwing your group over. He's very willing to work with you, and the reason he's so particular about grammar and spelling is not only because that's the level you should be at by now, but what you're producing in the project is a professional piece of work. Someone else WILL SEE IT. His style of teaching really allows you to learn, and his experiences in psychology are amazing. I'm definitely taking him again. It is a very relaxed class and is a great opportunity for psych majors (and like I said, it's really not a lot of work!)

This is the best professor I've ever had here. This was also the best class I've ever taken. Hands down. His requirements of you are not unreasonable. He has so much knowledge about every concept he teaches. I plan on taking him for person to person, just so I can take another one of his classes. You are missing out if you don't take him. Anybody who wrote a negative comment just did so because they are a lazy student and did not feel like doing the work. As long as you do what he says, you will get an A. You would have to try to fail this class. His main concern isn't your grade, that's why there are no tests. He just wants you to focus on the actual material and gain a knowledge for that, rather than for a test.

Is it true that Dr. France has you do a "lot" of work. Yes it is. But this is not 9th grade anymore assholes. First and foremost, the majority of those negative comments were about intro to Psychology which France does not teach anymore. To be honest, I have taken 2 classes with France…and I am about to take my third with him next semester. Abnormal Psy was a s*** load of work, but there are NO tests. If you stay with it, you will get an A. Person to Person I also took with France...I wish every class was that easy. My friends took Person to Person with Dr. Weikle and the entire semester they wished they would have been taking France. Person to Person with France was the easiest A I have ever gotten. There are no tests and one project which is easy as hell. All you do is roll plays, now they are taped and you do have to watch yourself... but that really helps you see what you are doing wrong. The final grade in Person to Person is a roll play. Some people freak out about that, but you practice doing roll plays EVERY week of class. If you need any help with them, France will and does help. I was struggling with my roll plays during the semester... I went to France and told him and I ended up really seeing what I was doing wrong. During finals week I was sooooo glad that I did not have to worry about another exam, all I had to do was a roll play...and at that point you have done about 20 of them. You will learn a lot in his class, and you don’t even have to try to.

I would definitely take Dr. France again. Yes at first the class seems overwhelming, but it really isnt. All you have to do is follow his syllabus and you'll do fine. I loved working with the mental health consumers, and it was the best experience ever. The papers at the end are not hard, you have to be an idiot not to do good. Just follow the outline, its simple. I loved Dr. France, he always has candy in his office for you and at the end of the semester he plays a song to show how much the class meant to him, kind of corny, but absolutely sweet. Take him if you can

Dr.France is seriously one of the best professors I've had in my college career and if youre interested in mental illnesses, you have to take abnormal psychology... Theres a lot of work and time commitments that come with the class, but if you do everything on time its easy to get a high grade in this class! Hes also very understanding, so if you need extra time, he'll help you with anything.

Dr. France is a good prof. The class seems very overwhelming at first. He gives you this huge project and he doesn't explain it well. That is part of his plan. He wants you to figure it out on your own and you will. The project is time consuming but once you get started it is easy. If you do well on the project you will do fine in the class. Just make sure you do the outlines of the chapters. He has you keep logs of the project and makes you write 2 papers. One is a paper written with your group. The final exam is open note and easy if you take good notes on the chapters. The class is time consuming but if you do the work you will get a good grade. His lectures are really interesting and if you come to class you will do fine! TAKE HIM!

I loved Dr. France's class. He is one of the most effective professors I have ever had. A few suggestions, though: Don't take him if you're lazy, not a psych major or have no interest in actually learning. For those of us who really want to know our subject, he's the man. I don't know about Intro, but Abnormal Psych was the best course I've had here. Those negative comments are from people who didn't get him. That's the problem, though. If you understand him and what he wants, you'll get an A, easy. If you think this is high school, and can slip by, you'll get torn apart. To get a good grade, do what he says. That's all.

I don't know why people think writing papers for his class is so hard. He's anal about grammar, and he has to check your paper 3 times before you hand in the final copy. By the 3rd time he looks at it, it should be perfect. He tells you everything that's wrong with your paper before you hand it in for a grade and you can fix it. And if you're a psych major and serious about getting into abnormal psychology, this class is perfect to take because even though you have to drive and do a project, you get first hand experience working with people who are mentally ill.

Dr. france is definitely one of the most effective teachers here at SHIP. The class wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. I learned so much from it. He has a bunch of awesome stories and examples that help you apply the information. The trips to the clubhouse to visit the mental health consumers were very informative and fun. The project we did with them turned out really well and was very fun. Another thing, there are NO tests! How great is that? Instead of tests you have to write an essay on each chapter. Not hard at all if you read them. So if you want to learn, I recommend taking this class. If you're serious about learning, you won't regret it...

I was very worried on the first day of class. But, I think Dr. France just does not like large classes, so he freaks everyone out, therefore half of the class drops out. If you do sign up for this class, just wait it out. There is reading, but it's not unreasonable, all you do is take notes and write a paper for each chapter. There are no tests. You go to a clubhouse to work with people with mental illnesses (but hello, this is an ab. psych. class). If you do what he asks, you'll do fine. He's very intelligent, has some funny stories, and is a very understading prof. Take him if you can.

Dr. France is one of the best Prof's I've had here at Ship. He's always there when you need him. Tests can be hard, BUT they are strictly from the notes, and you get a whole sheet of paper to write whatever you want. Everything is at your disposal.  Pick this professor! As long as you do the work, the class really isn't that hard. There are 2 group papers that have to be written...so it's not like you have to do all the work. And he has meetings with you to go over your paper and he corrects almost everything and he'll answer all your questions. The class is interesting so reading the chapters he assigns isn't that bad. He interacts with the class...it's not just a professor rambling at you. And on the tests you get to write all your notes on 1 piece of paper...write small! Don't take this class if you're not going to do the work.

Dr. France's class was so ridiculous. Everyone failed our midterm and he still wouldnt drop the grade. Instead he made us write a paragraph on what we could do to do better on our next exam. He's really boring too. You have a paper due every week and they are pretty stupid, at least I thought so. Whats really crazy is that you have a cheat sheet for your exams but they don't really help.

If there is one teacher you should never take it is this guy. Seriously, all his tests and exams must be perfect along with a group project that he really expects perfection on. We had about 20 quizzes and all 5 questions so to study everything and have it narrowed to 5 questions. Basically, it's almost impossible to get a decent grade and I would seriously consider firing this weirdo because he is not a normal person. Also, he has the weirdest teaching methods that are hard to follow, expects you to write extrmemely fast, and will never repeat anything no matter how much you ask.

This guy is a freakin joke. He wants you to do a project that requires about 2000 miles out of your car because of all the traveling that is required to meet with mental health consumers. The project is a disaster. Get this, you really don't even have to go to the mental health consumers, you just have to make up a log that says you did and youre ok. The only thing he grades you on is how many grammatical mistakes you made in your final paper that is about fourteen pages long. If you make more than 10 grammatical errors no matter how slight, he rewards you with a 0% for the whole project. Thats no joke, if you don't believe me just check out the syllabus. The positive comments above come from people who kiss as* the whole semester.

I would not advise you to take Prof. France's course because he is a very unreasonable professor. He will grade you on nothing but your ability to write a perfect paper. I would drop out of college before I took this guys class again. If you ever take a strangers advice in your life, take mine and you will see, thats why I am not affraid to put my name on this comment, I hope prof. france reads this comment too because he gave me, my group and another group the SHAFT in his class. He insulted us with the grade he gave us and if I had my way I would fire his a**. I am a reasonable person and I would never bash someone without a reason and believe me, I have all the reason in the world. I would also like to add that there are other professors on campus that would agree with most of the statements I have made. So please take my advice and take another professor for your psychology classes. Dr. Sato, Dr. Campbell, and Dr. Boeree are excellent professors and you can learn alot from them.

This is the worst prof possible. NEVER take this a hole. The class is so rediculous and you have to do this project in which you work with consumers and its worth a large part of the grade. The thing is he tells you nothing about what to do for it, he just expects you to know. He should be fired. Even other teachers have said not to take him. Do not take this shmuck. Wait til there is another abnormal psych class.

He is the weirdest guy ever! He uses a microphone in class to talk to about twenty people. He assigns two group papers both of which you have to meet with him on. Get a tape recorder for this class because every group paper must be tape recorded before seeing him. He assigns extra credit but it's finding the time to meet with him. He has very limited office hours. He assigns chapers to read all the time and if you don't read them you are bound to fail the quiz. If you like to read and spend ALL of your time on one class then i guess he's perfect for you...but otherwise don't take him!!!!

Dr. France was alright. I'd say that I wasn't running to his class everyday cause I enjoyed it. It was more of a guessing game. He does not give you a lot of information about the project that is pretty much your entire grade. The only good thing about the class was that there were no tests, so at least you don't have to worry about that.

This class requires so much work. You go into this class and the sylabus is like 10 pages long. He tells you that the class is only worth 100 points. You have to do these homework assignments which take hours and they are only worth one point. He puts a lot of emphasis on grammar. This class requires a lot of writing. However, it gives you hands on experience. You will interact with mental consumers which is kind of uncomfortable at first but you will soon adjust. This class is a hard class, there are no tests, just one massive project will consume your entire semester. You will have to meet with Dr. France at least three times before turning in your written material. And even after he looks at it three times (or more) he will still find something wrong that he told you to fix and you did and take points off of your grade. He is very anal about a lot of things. He knows the information is he teaching, but the way he teaches is very awkward. If you could take this class with another professor, I would suggest doing that!

The first day of class you will feel totally overwhelmed and want to drop the class. I decided to stick with it, and what a rewarding experience it was. I never enjoyed being around people with mental illness, but as a result of this class I now feel comfortable talking to and being with them. It can be a major pain in the ass trying to get your group together for visits and meetings, but as long as you do you work and do it on time you'll have no prolem getting an A. Dr. France comes across as anal, but he if you don't do things the way he wants you won't get full credit. Since the class is only worth 100 points, I highly recommend doing as he says. His availability sucks, too, but usually if you contact him an alternative time can be arranged.

I started out this class hating, and I mean hating this man. I thought he was the worst professor ever. He has some very strange habits, including the well-known microphone. You have to record all papers which was initally a huge pain, but if you actually used it the way you were supposed to; listening to it inorder to find mistakes, it actually did help. Out side of class he is a totally different person. In class he can be horrible. It seems as if he goes through constant mood swings. For example you have to write two one page papers per chapter of the book that you read. These are due every other class period. Then you get into groups of 3 and evaluate the papers. Your grade is based on how well you evaluate. You either get a 10, 6, 2, or 0. If you miss one mistake your down to a 6. Add a couple of those up and your grade sucks. Well we asked him one time if we could have 8's and 4's added into that grade scale and he wouldn't even listen to our reasoning. A few weeks later he returned our papers, and low and behold we had 8's. I assure you don't even have to read, I never did. You don't have to there are no tests. You only have to skim them enough to find 2 topics to write about for you 1 page papers.
